Root Please point me in the right direction

My oldest daughter has a completely stock Vibrant and has not even rooted.
She is having issues with her device I believe will be fixed by bringing it up to the latest available stock build.
I am well versed in Motorola devices, but have no clue how to work on a Samsung device.
Can someone point me to a good (she's on t-mobile, and all my spare devices are verizon) reliable step by step upgrade procedure so i can make my little girl happy again? TIA, fellow forum members!

well first of all before updating you have to register the device on samsung.com.
after its registered you just download Kies Mini and update via it. just before you update, backup the apps since theyll get deleted. however all the stuff on the internal and external sd card will stay untouched.
