When I got my Prevail in September I got it rooted within 2weeks. Now Im ready to do some custom rom installs. I have read a lot in these forums, but still need a little help to ensure I dont brick. Im still using Froyo fyi. I do have Titanium BackUp Pro. I also have ROM Manager Premium. I would like to install the Excel Beta 5 rom.

I do not have ClockWorkMod installed. So first question is, how do I go about getting it and installing it? I seen here in the forums that ROM Manager can brick the Prevail, so that got me a little freaked out.

Next, in Titanium, on the main screen, I noticed DropBox does not have a check mark next to it. Is that a problem?

After these issues have been addressed, am I now able to install the Excel Beta 5 Rom? Ive never done ODIN before so Im just kinda worried about the process.

Thanks a million to any help anyone can provide:)

DO NOT USE Rom Manager for anything but rebooting.

To install ClockWorkMod just follow the steps here: http://androidforums.com/galaxy-pre...m-recovery-utility-update-01-12-12-fixed.html
It's actually a very simple process.
Recomendation, once you have CWM on your phone, immediatly make a CWM back up of your phone.

Once that is done you should be able to install any Rom of your choice. Just make sure you make a new backup before you flash anything.

As for Titanium Backup, I have the same version and Dropbox not being enabled is not anything to worry about. However I would use it to back up all your apps and app data before flashing as well.

To install any GB based Rom you have to be on Gingerbread. Easiest way to update is to follow the steps here: http://androidforums.com/galaxy-pre...turn-phone-stock-factory-updated-11-09-a.html
I personally used Koumajutsu's image for the update. Both I'm pretty sure include ClockWorkMod when they install.

Thanks for the response. So in order for me to install the Excel Beta 5, I need to first get to Gingerbread? Will I still be rooted when I Odin to GB, if I follow the instructions on the page you linked?

Yes after you get gb installed and handled then goto Excel Prevail thread.and all the directions are in their

I'd also GET RID OF ROM MANAGER... what the hell do ya need it for?? lol..

I had bought it after I rooted back in September, but I never used it since I didnt see the Prevail on it. I uninstalled it to clear up some space. I just found out about the bricking issue yesterday. I dont do anything to my phone unless Im totally confident in what Im doing. Example: 3yrs ago I installed Homebrew on my Wii. I read a dozen articles a hundred times before I went through with it. And that was a simple 20min process:):)

After getting Clock Work installed.

I would check out the CT-Rom (http://androidforums.com/galaxy-prevail-all-things-root/432614-rom-gb-ctmod-2-4-01-05-12-a.html )
Very fast, basic, good place to start from.

I have been running this for awhile now and really happy with the switch to this from the stock rom.

Ok. Maybe I will try that instead of Excel. I was just interested in the Excel rom because of the claims that it can speed up the 3G. Does the CTmod do the same?

I know in CTMOD 2.1 the 3G was optimized.... Not sure if it still is but if you wanna try a good ROM with the 3G tweaked and a speedy set-up... try out CM7... I use it and I love it... I also use the link2sd which has not let me down yet..... i have like 130-140ish apps installed and its still runnin just fine...

Excel prevail is baaed off cm7.so it kind of got the same thing

SOOOO MAANNNNYYY CHHOOOIIIICCCEEESSSS..... they are all good ROMS and I'm sure whichever you choose you'll be happy with...

IMHO, I would install the newest version of CTMOD. It is very stable, as I know from experience. It is also lean, mean and fast, allowing for your own customizations. Several other Roms on this forum are based upon it.

Use CTMOD for a while, and then try out CM7. It is awesome, but has a lot more options. You will want to keep your backup of CTMOD since it is handy to use for updating PRL, etc.

Don't worry about the Dropbox feature in Titanium Backup too much. You can enable it in the TB settings if you have a dropbox account. I would not even try to use it over 3g, much too slow. I have not tried it over wifi, but I am sure it is much faster and possibly useable.

It is easy to CWM between the two ROMs once you have the backups because they use the same EXT4 formatting.

THANKS GUYS! I finally went through with it and it all went smoother than shaved beaver! I decided to go with the CTMod 2.4. Now that I see how easy it is, Ill be sure to check out a few other roms within the next few weeks. I thank you all again. You were all awesome!:D

PS - Now if someone could only figure out how to Root a Sony Tablet S.
