Please tell me IM doesn't use txt messages!

I was reading some info awhile ago on the droid on some site and it stated that IM apps etc use your text messages on your plan please tell me this is incorrect. My droid is supposed to be here tomorrow and definitely am not interested in this phone if Verizon is pulling that crap on this phone. I'm aware that is how IM apps work on non smart phone Verizon phones and assumed that wasn't the case for the Droid.

Is anyone sure on this because I'm finding all kinds of conflicting answers by searching google. Just to clarify I am referring to IMs sent through IM apps such as Meebo or Gtalk as well as tweets etc....

I know for a fact that twitter doesn't b/c I have no major increase in the use of my SMS - and if Twitter is a live web-enabled app, then I'd bet that IMs are as well....

It makes no sense to use SMS, with its 160 char limit, for IMs, which are usually limited at a much higher cap (300-400, IIRC).
