honestly, if you do not know how to tap into your wifi then you'll be better off just downloading over the air. It will be faster in the end

My suggestion would be to find the user manual for your phone and read it. That should give you some basic instructions on connecting to Wifi. Also, based on your question, I expect there are a lot of things you are probably missing out on with your phone, and the manual will help you see what you can do with it.

Note that Android will be different depending on your phone model and the version of the software installed on it. If you can get a manual from your provider, that would be best.

And downloading JUST the Swipe app will not take much data anyway. Either way will probably take just a few seconds.

As for the question of whether wi-fi is faster, usually but not always. Wi-fi is a short-range bridge to a modem that could be on dial-up, dsl, broadband cable, etc. If you have 3G service at your house but your wi-fi modem is on a slow DSL connection, the phone will be faster. If you don't have unlimited data, I would still use the wi-fi though.

Given the questions you're asking it would probably take less time for you to download Swype over 3G than to figure out how to set up your device to access WiFi at home (if possible) and then download Swype over WiFi.

WiFi has higher speed limits than 3G but, as stated above, that doesn't mean that it's faster in every possible situation. There are many variables that affect the speeds that you will attain with either type of connection.

WiFi is WiFi. You connect to a WiFi access point. Not sure what you're referring to as the "modem" but you'll get more useful responses if you can provide the make & model.
