So, what do you folks think about a teen (18yo) suing her parents because they won't pay for her college if she won't obey house rules?

A bit more background: Apparently the girl was an honor student but was suspended twice from school (not stated why), had been caught drinking, was stripped of cheerleader captain position for unspecified reasons. She had a boyfriend who was "trouble" in the eyes of the parents and they told her either the boyfriend went or she needed to move. She moved. She's saying her parents abandoned her. The girl is 18 and technically an adult. Now she's suing her parents because they won't fork over the money for her to go to UVM so she can be some sort of a Dr (I think).

The parents say if she'd dump the BF she'd be welcome to come home as long as she abided by house rules (curfews, chores etc) and they would then make her college fun available to her.

Personally, I'm ok with the parents position and think it's ridiculous for them to be being sued.

What do you folks think?

I have mixed emotions on this one....

legally I dont think they should be obliged to pay for anything..... shes 18.... she made the decision to move out..... shes emancipated..... she wanted to roll the dice she should accept craps

morally I think as parents they should be there to support their kid regardless of what mistakes she may make..... shes an adult and they should respect her decisions...... they have to ask themselves.... do they want a kid who made some bad decisions but goes to college or a kid who made some bad decisions and works at Wal-Mart

in the end its a sad situation....... but the best result regardless of emotions involved would be for the kid to continue her education...... maybe they should have read some books or talked to people before they jumped into bed believing that parenting is easy

maybe rather than taking this to court they should be taking it to the Jerry Springer Show or Dr Phil

Oh, she can continue her education, she has scholarships, etc. She just can't afford to go where she wants to go without her parents money. So she can go to school either way.

Read books before having a kid - you are kidding right? (pun intended. ;) )

The other piece of background is, the father is an ex police chief.

Ding! Ding! Ding! we have a winner.

Stupid, stupid, stupid girl. And her lawyer is Right behind her.

Her parent's lawyer should have her nailed for filling a frivolous lawsuit and make her thusly liable for EVERYONE'S legal fees. It certainly has no legal ground unless there was some contract not mentioned where her parents contracted with her that if she'd do X, they'd pay.

Also stupid because I suspect suing your Mom and Dad for not paying your college will GREATLY diminish if not Eliminate any inheritance she'd otherwise get from them Later. I GUARANTEE YOU my parents wouldn't leave me Jack Squat if I sued them for something like this.

Yeah, heard that on the 6:00 news. Surprised there weren't more opinions. I figured it'd generate some interesting discussion... guess I figured wrong huh? ;D

I didn't hear the whole story this morning (pre-coffee) but apparently the judge did NOT dismiss the case but postponed it. They will be BACK in court in April to determine if the parents are legally required to pay for the kids choice of a private college or not.

The fat lady ain't sang yet folks.

Personally, from what I've seen and read she got in with the "wrong crowd" and was headed down the road to even more trouble, the parents attempted to intervene and she left.

My opinion? You made your bed lady - now go lay in it. The parents had tried but with an 18 year old there's only so much you can do. Legally liable to pay for where ever she wants to go to school??? Not!

An education is not a RIGHT, it's a privilege, it has to be earned and deserved. Show poor behavior and it can be taken away.

All parents should keep an list of everything they spend on their kids then present it as a bill on the kid's 18th b'day.

In this case, it could be offset against any settlement the court imposes.

That's ridiculous.

Parent's ARE legally obligated to give their kids the basics when they're growing up.

They're NOT required by any law to pay for college.

Do you even READ what you type? So little of it makes Any logical sense at all.

Err. Not quite.

The judge DID rule AGAINST darling Princess Rachael tossing out her request for immediate support and paying of her HS tuition. So he's certainly indicating which way he's leaning on the rest IMO.

The fat lady may not have sung, but she's damn sure warming up.

Yep, you're right! Toldja I hadn't had my coffee yet. ;)

"Another hearing to decide whether to require her parents to pay for Canning's college tuition is tentatively scheduled for April 22."

OT: Mind if I pm you regarding the Ocala area?

Kids have an obligation to do their part also. If she wants them to help pay for her college education, she needs to obey their rules.

And the kicker is, the friends father (who she ran away to stay with) is the one who's footing the legal bill for her lawsuit. This society's really headed down the drain.

My opinion? Sure, kids screw up. But the parents told her, "our house, our rules, and we pay for college". They offered and made it available- she turned it down. Deal's a deal- you turn it down, too effin' bad. She should by all rights be told she's **** out of luck.

I live in NJ. Apparently there IS some kind of NJ law about parents and college payments, so the tuition part of this case isn't closed, therefore.
