Help Poor battery life

Wilhump

Newbie
I have been looking around here and people seem to be getting at least a day out of theirs the longest i have made it is 12 hours. I installed Gsam battery and cpu spy. As of right now my phone has been off the charger for 9:34:29 and i am at 25%. The only thing that looks funny is that it says my phone radio has been on for 8:42:17 and has used almost 17% of my battery.

Hi, as you've noticed there are numerous threads about S3 batt performance...:D

This post is very helpful, IMHO.

Thats the post that prompted me to sign up for and post this thread. It says his phone has been on for 9:40:55 and radio only on 39:02. When i checked mine it the radio had been on for almost 9 hours!

I see. I am pretty much a non techie when it comes to phones. What is the radio?? Is the part of the phone that transmits data, sounds, etc, etc?

For me, the phone will last about a day. When at home I turn off the mobile data plan and use my Vzn wireless account. But, in the end, it doesn't really matter. When I'm not using it, it sits in a charger....

Good luck with your problem...

Cheers,
Steve

The radio, or cell standby figure is a "bug"; it really hasn't used that much of your battery. See http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...andby-issue-please-sign-petition-samsung.html for more details.

Post up the rest of the Gsam stats and maybe we can figure out what's responsible for your battery drain.

Nothing looks particularly out of place; was the battery at 100% when you disconnected the charger?

Yes That radio looks way different that any other one i have seen posted around here. When i opened it i expected to be searching for signal most of the time.

It shows the signal strength had been mostly moderate to good. I wouldn't expect that to be an excessive drain from being in a weak signal area.

This is what i was comparing it to. It says mine was running for almost 9 hours and i only made 3 calls all day compared to 39.

Yea, I'm not sure on that. There's a bug with the way the S3 reads the power consumption of the radio. For whatever reason mine is now up to 21% and showing it's been active the last 9 hours (since I left work and got home).

My thinking is that it should show "on" pretty much the entire time, but that the % used is calculated wrong and should be much lower... Thought maybe the Gsam update changed the way it interpreted the data but apparently that's not the case.

Todays stats. I streamed pandora via bluetooth for almost 6 hours today and have nearly the same results.

Only thing I see is your wakelock is high. Wakelocks are good indicators if the battery drain is high when the phone is off and supposed to sleep. A good place to start is to click on the bottom middle button in Gsam ( the "+" with the cirlce around it) and switch the screen off for a few hours. Then look at Gsam and see what apps/processes have prevented the phone from sleeping.

1. Click the bottom middle icon in Gsam (this resets the stats from that point)
2. Leave it in standby for at least one hour (2 hours would be better)
3. After that time open Gsam and click the "System *wakelocks*" entry.

You will then see what has been causing wake and which processes have been running since the device restarted.

Rebooting the phone also works but there's no guarantee whatever is causing the wakelocks will be running when the phone is rebooted since all the apps are cleared on reboot as well.

Would me listening to pandora via bluetooth headphones today cause all the wakelocks? It seems weird that i got nearly the same battery life with the internet and processor running 6 hours today.

I don't know without looking at the wakelock stats. Click on it and see what's causing it before you reset.
