Root Poor ergonomic design - Galaxy s has no separate phone lock timer

What a brilliant piece of technology the 'Galaxy s' is. All the technology & design imaginable to make the phone slick. Except not quite because designers all too often forget the ABC of ergonomics which are at least as important to design as the high tech aspects of the device.

Instead the Galaxy designers have managed to create something almost as irritating as the Iphone which I sold on Ebay within a week of owning & went back my N95. Within 1 minute of getting my Galaxy out of the box & starting it up I found my blood pressure rising as I found myself having to swipe the virtuel unlock key every 15 seconds :eek:
I'm thinking I don't believe it.
They are whizz kids at high tech yet they seem unable to design simple things.
There's no option to adjust the auto phone lock time !

The only work round is to set a longer screen timeout which then hammers the battery !
On my Nokia N95 there are separate options for auto keypad lock time & also for screen timeout.

Unbelievable that Samsung don't give the option to set these two things on the Galaxy independent of one another !

Does anyone know an app to set auto screen lock time
 
it's in the Sound and Display. You can adjust your time 15s, 30s, 1 min, 2 min, 10 min or 30 min.

... you may want to read the manual or just explore a bit more?
 
I think if Samsung made the options available on the phone as detailed as you're expecting them, it would be just too complicated to work the phone. That's why the detailed options are available through different apps and widgets. I'm sure there are options on Galaxy S that you can't find on N95 also.
 
there is an app I use called Extended controls which puts many of the more hidden options in a widget, includes a button to set the screen timeout. very very handy.
 
Go to Market and install "Quick Battery" and also "Quick Settings" by Sergej Shafarenka.
It'll allow you access to all most of your settings (can custom) and acts as a battery indicator too.
 
My wife has said that if you press the on / off key once on the side of the phone it locks straight away and she can't see what the problem is! :eek:
 
I find this irritating too. This is the way I use my phone - I pick it up, do something, put it down, come back to it maybe 15 seconds or 1 minute later, or about 4 minutes later when a song finishes. I'd have thought that was quite typical... Coming back to the phone within a couple of minutes.

Yet if I keep my screen off time high, then I notice that it uses over 50% of my battery. And I don't actually need it on.

If I keep my screen off time low I an unlocking, and unlocking, and unlocking, and unlocking... and it feels pointless as I know that I don't need my phone lock to be set so low, necessarily.

Now, no way am I not going to have a decent lock screen, because I can't predict when the phone might slip out of my pocket etc. Or, to have a toggle, for the same reason, what if I am interrupted before I turn the toggle back on, so my phone is unprotected for the next x hours? So turning a lock screen off or using a toggle are not good options in my book.

Why is there not a screen time out setting and a lock time setting? So you can set the lock to some time you think reasonable (say 3 minutes, assuming a thief is too busy running to worry about using the phone for a little bit or that a couple of minutes have already passed) but have the screen flick off in say, 10 seconds?

Considering the options you get in the menu that get quite complex or technical, I don't think this would be a problem at all as far as the end user goes. "Screen off" and "Screen lock" are quite discrete, normal concepts.

Does anyone know of anything to achieve that? The widgets, setting apps etc do not seem to provide that possibility, just the ability to change things on the fly. I could have missed something.
 
try Tasker, it allows you to set custom and varied timeouts, lock screen etc depending on certain criteria such as certain time of the day or if your using a certain app etc.

Thanks, looks useful. I'll have a fiddle and see if I can find some happy medium between use and security.
 
To my knowledge there is no app that gives you greater control over your android than tasker.

Enjoy playing with it.

I think you might want to apologise for that as it's you that's not reading the post properly.
The problem isn't how long the screen stays on for, the problem is that when the screen comes back on it is locked and there is no way of changing that.
Some nokias can be adjusted so that the keylock doesn't have to switch on just because the screen is switched off, GEDDIT.
