Help Pop Up Adds

I am a new Nexus 7 user and have downloaded a couple of games including spider solitaire. It seems they come with offensive adds that pop up at the beginning of each game. Is there any way of stopping the pop up's short of deleting the games.?

If you are willing to root your device you can download an app like App Blocker that blocks these adds. Otherwise, no.

What is "rooting" mean? What are the plus and minus? Why do I care? Does it make the machine do different things?

This thread will explain rooting. Basically, right now there are areas of the Android OS you are not allowed to access. Rooting gives you access to these areas to do stuff like block adds you would normally not be able to do.

I think what you're referring to is an ad hardcoded into the app. If it's a full screen pop up after each deal, I don't think it can be removed. Ad blocker or the likes will remove the add from the page, but it'll keep opening each time simply because that's how the app was made.
Very annoying way of advertising and sadly gaining in popularity.

Games often have pay versions that are advert free, or you can can find a pay version of the game froma different supplier.
