Pop ups in Chinese

I have not downloaded or installed any programs on my phone lately. All I noticed was Chrome was updating by downloading an upgrade.

Shortly after, about every 30-45 minutes, I get a pop up. Every pop up is in Chinese or another language with similar characters.

These pop ups do not seem to be associated with a browser. They pop up when I open different apps and once on the home screen. I get no notifications about the pop ups. I looked at my downloaded apps and all apps and everything looks good there.

The first ones looked like a cartoon, with an X box on the top right to close. Now they look like they should be system messages (2 options and some sort of an OK box at the bottom). I cannot read the language so I don't know what they say.

I'm a new member so I can't post links or images.

Any help would be a appreciated.

Thanks.

Install Malwarebytes and a virus scanner (I use Avast). Run them at night and go to sleep. One of them will probably find something.

I stalled an app called "network connection" to monitor the 2 way traffic my phone was making with the wifi network. It would seem that pop ups need to communicate with the interwebs to work.

One app showed up that shouldn't have (haven't used in a long time) called "currency converter". I deleted that app, and so far, so good. Only time will tell now.
