Port my number??

With the price drop of the Nexus 4, I'm planning on picking one up and heading to Tmobile but right now I'm with Sprint. I'd like to just port my number over but my question is will they let me since I'm not buying the phone from them. I'm essentially just bringing my own phone in and asking them to activate it on their network right? So could they or would they port my number? Thanks in advance and sorry if this is a silly question :confused:

Under American law, carriers must port phone numbers. So you're good! If you mean buying a Nexus 4, going to T-Mobile, and porting the number, you're fine! :)
 
I just did exactly that. Got the Nexus 4 in the mail yesterday and went to the T-Mobile store today. My number is in the process of being ported over from Sprint.

I was charged $10 for the SIM card. I think if I were to buy it online, it would be $0.99. However, I was anxious to get the SIM and this is a holiday weekend, so I didn't mind spending the $10.

I didn't because of the lack of features in Google Voice. Your Google Voice number is considered a land line. As most cell phone plans offer unlimited mobile to mobile calling, you wouldn't be able to take advantage of that feature.

Also, the lack of MMS support is a drawback for some people. And, I don't think group texts work either.

And, short codes do not work.

If none of the above matter to you, then GV is a good solution.
 
GV would be good for someone who may choose the prepaid plan of 100 talk mins., unlimted web & text for $30...I may look into this plan when time comes for me to switch. I'm not a big talker.

How would GV be better than using your real cell phone number in this situation?
 
I wasn't saying it will be better but one can use GV along with using their 100 minutes. Those 100 mins. can go pretty fast within a month's time.

When I had 450 minutes talk with Vzw, I would have the wife call the GV number instead of my phone number to help save my minutes, since she likes to do alot of talking. If I needed to call a buisness, who put you hold on for who knows how long, I would dial using the GV number.

I still have the GV with Talkatone and using it more now with my wifi only tablet. I have unlimited talk with vzw now.

Where you using a 3rd party app like GrooVeIP? Otherwise using your GV number will still use your cell phone minutes.

You are correct, without a third party app such as Talkatone or GrooveIP, GV will use your phone minutes. If you're not around wifi, it will work on your data also, so if you have limited data, keep that in mind.
