Porting phone numbers

I want to buy a new MetroPCS phone.

I wish to port(?) the number on my existing phone to the new phone and then port a number from another account to the old phone.

Is there any problem with this? Is moving a number on the same carrier actually porting.

I spent time trying to explain this to a rep. She finally said she would transfer me and assured me that I could talk to a real person.
The system hung up on me after the transfer...

When you get a new phone you will have the same # as the old phone. But "porting" an old account number wont be possible because after 30 days of inactivity they recycle that number.

The way your explaining it makes it sound more complicated then it has to be.

Let me run this by you and see if this is what your trying to do.
You want to add a new phone to the existing number you have, no problem just buy the phone call them have them change the esn on that number to the new phone, then you want to add the phone you just replaced to a different existing number on someone else s account, after the esn is released(because you added a new phone esn number) your free to add that esn to the other phone number.

Thanks to both. The answers are simple and now that I've read them obvious.

As soon as I think of an excuse for my forgetfulness (I have changed phones in the past) I'll get back to you. If I remember.
