how do you change to portrait keypad on samsung galaxy s4. i don't see an option for portrait keypad

Its normally automatic. Perhaps you have autorotate turned off in settings

Menu
Settings
Display
Auto rotate

Also check the settings in
Menu
Settings
Laguage and input
Keyboard settings - press the"cog"for options
