Possible cause for Reboots

MrB206

Android Expert
I'm sure most of you have experienced the random reboot. My experience has been with ADW and BrokenOut, but since BO is a cleaned-up version of stock, we can conclude the reboot is related to stock. Caveat emptor: I'm not a Linux/Android programmer, so my assertions are based on causal connections, not because I deciphered the code. If anyone wants to do so, please do. I'd love a more technical analysis of the issue.

I ran a logcat and waited for a reboot... here's where the system went into 'debug' aka prior to a reboot: VS920-CRASHREPORT - Pastebin.com

You'll notice this a lot:

Code:
05-20 21:03:52.911 W/SharedBufferStack( 822): waitForCondition(LockCondition) timed out (identity=3, status=0). CPU may be pegged. trying again.

Now when i got the ADW crash report (when the phone rebooted), here's what came up (I'm pasting an earlier one, since I can't find the exact one... it's the same error): ADW Error - 5-19 - Pastebin.com

It appears the issues is "java.lang.RuntimeException: system server dead?", which happens to others (looks like a weather widget): android - java.lang.RuntimeException: system server dead? - Stack Overflow

So the question remains: why does the VS920 have this issue so much and other roms/phones don't?

That's perfect timing for you to bring this up a today I had 4 reboots all while using I heart radio app. Never had this issue before but I cannot determine what would cause this. I'm running Launcher Pro Plus on Broken Out 2.0. Wondering if reinstalling app will help? Guess it can't hurt to try. I was looking around in the LPP menu trying to find a crash report, but have been unable to do so as of yet. Will continue to keep looking.

I've tried installing apps without the saved data, starting from a fresh flash... none work.

But I know this: ever since I started using FTL launcher and stopped running ADW, my phone hasn't rebooted at all.

IMO, we can conclude one of two things: 1- Apps aren't working right with the LG version of Android we have or 2- The LG version of Android is flawed and doesn't process Java correctly.

Given I don't see these reboots on other phones with these apps, I'm inclined to believe it's #2.

Mine has gotten worse, the last four "reboots" were actually power offs. One today, two yesterday, and one the day before mother's day.

Heavily modified Broken Out 2.0 with blitzkrieg, and adw. Going to backup my adw settings, install ftp and uninstall adw now. I'll add a new post here if anything happens.

I think you'll find ADW was the cause. It's possible widgets are to blame, but I *think* it only happens to self-updating widgets, so if you don't have widgets updating when the screen is off (like I do), then removing ADW will do the trick. I haven't had a problem since I replaced ADW.

I've been running eclipse for over 2 weeks and have only got 1 reboot that i remember. I'm currently at 101 hours of uptime.

I've posted several times on many threads here, how I have not been having reboots since BO 1.3. But I had one the day I installed 2.0 (3 days after it was released), and I've had three random "power off" episodes since.

(And lots of reboots before I ever used Broken Out)

If you weren't using adw, it's really moot. The issue is adw and some widgets that work while the phone is off... Both throw java errors and the app thinks the server is dead when it's not.

What are you using instead? I didn't bother to freeze Launcher Pro because it's not a 'self runner' if there's another home app used.

I'm running ADW EX on my rooted stock v6 Spectrum. I never had issues on my rooted and de-bloated v4 set-up, but now I get a reboot basically once per day.

I've noticed it tends to happen when I'm downloading/uploading quite a bit of data. I think what I'll do is return to stock and apply the v6 update again. Then I'll root again, but not so aggressively. Maybe this will help.

If not, I guess I'll switch over to Broken Out 2.0.

I am on Broken Out 2.0 using Go Launcher EX for two weeks now. I had a reboot yesterday while using Camera ICS. Other than that, zero issues and Go Launcher EX has worked amazingly well for me.

I had another "random power off" today I was using street view to show a friend where to turn to get home from a place we went to grab a bite from, I was moving around in street view mode and it just shut down (I get the LG logo screen first)

I was using FTL launcher, with no other launcher installed on the phone. As such I have moved to ZEAM launcher and will be flashing Broken Out EvenLess 3.0 after I go to sleep and then wake up today. will report back if I have any other issues.

If things continue after flashing 3.0, I guess we need to start a listing of all the apps we have installed to try and narrow down a cause. since the issue occurs with stock and Broken Out, I am certain it is not caused by overclocking, nor the changes made in Broken Out.

Do you find it as sad and ironic that for as beefy as this phone is, it can't handle the easiest tasks that a phone with 1/2 the resources can? My wife's Droid X NEVER randomly reboots, even when doing the tasks that I do on my Spectrum that causes a reboot.

The phone can handle it. Mine never reboots or powers off. I really think there were multiple build lines for this device with a couple build lines being faulty. It wierd how some devices have issues and some dont with similar set ups.

mine only reboots when i put it on my metal (MAGNETIC!!!) desk at work. it goes into full-bore bootloop until i pick it back up off of the desk.
i am running BrokenOut 3.0 right now and this phone has never run better.

damn, it is nice! :D

since installing BrokenOut 3.0, i have been only a light user, but still...

Just a few days ago I flashed Broken Out 3.0. After giving it a try, I found I'm not a big fan of Xperia Home, so I installed ADW EX. It wasn't working very well, so I installed Launcher Pro. I've not had any significant issues with it. Sure, the phone rebooted on me once, but that was while I was moving a lot of apps to SD. I'm guessing that was really MY fault.

I'm feeling really screwed by ADW EX. I'd try contacting the dev to get my money back, but he never replied to my request to change the way the dock rotates when changing from portrait to landscape mode. I doubt he'd reply to me demanding my money back.

I hope when LG releases the ICS update our phones are still easy to root. I'm also hoping we'll be able to partake in AOSP and/or AOKP ROMs. But even if we can't, I'll probably be trying the Nova and Apex launchers.

I wouldn't be so quick to respond blame adw. Like I said, I've run adw for 4 years on 3 droids (the og, d2g and x) and NEVER had these java problems.
So the issue is either how adw interacts with the hardware, which is unlikely, or how the lg rom is operating. If other lg users on the Nitro and revo have these issues with adw, then it's clearly adw and interaction with the hardware, but if not, it's most likely the rom lg released for the spectrum.

yes I do. I'm getting tired of random reboots etc. my ally had a crappy 600mhz processor and I can recall having maybe 1 reboot in 2 years. I'm kind of getting to the same point as you and wondering if this phone is worth keeping. maybe the ICS update will help? I'm gonna try running v6 stock for awhile and see if there's any improvement.

you guys are noobs :p jk

Sucks. Does seem to be a lot of people struggling with reboots. I wouldn't say I've had issues with them to where it's annoying or a problem but I have had a lot, but I also do a lot of modding.
