Root Possible loss of root?

HiDef

Newbie
Hello, thank you in advance for any comments or suggestions....

Sometime last summer (2012) I rooted my Evo 4G LTE and installed an ICS ROM at the time. In Feb this year I successfully flashed the stock JB ROM "OFFICIAL_JB_RUU_3.15.651.16_Odex".

A couple days ago I tried to flash an updated Viper ROM: "Viper4G-3.1.5". The flash never completed, so I ran a recovery and reinstalled an earlier Nandroid backup.

However, it appears that I might have lost root? Although I can still boot into TWRP (v2.2) recovery just fine, and I can make Nandroid backups, when I run Titanium Backup (including Root key), TB it immediately tells me that it can't verify that I am rooted, and won't proceed. TB had always run properly for me in the past.

I've been hesitant to try to flash Viper again if in fact I'm not rooted. Might I have lost root root even though I can boot into TWRP? If so, any guidance or suggestions about how to get root back (if in fact I've lost it) would be appreciated....

Thank you!

Good news is you didn't lose root. Something might be borked in that particular ROM, but you can get in to TWRP so all is not lost. You're s-on so it sounds like you're forgetting to fastboot flash the kernels. There is a sticky guide somewhere up top on the main root page of the forum (I'll link it when I get to a computer). This issue doesn't sound like any of the known issues I've heard of for not fastboot flashing the kernel, but an improperly flashed kernel can mess up a whole bunch of stuff. I'd try fastboot flashing the kernel for the ROM you're flashing and see if that clears some stuff up.

And when you flash Viper don't wipe anything first. The Aroma installer will wipe for you in a way that works best for Viper.

Windsorclarenc, thank you so much for the comments. In fact after your comments I was seemingly able to install Viper 3.1.5 successfully, at least the installer said so. But after I clear the splash screen on Viper after the install and reboot, I get a system message that says "Unfortunately, settings has stopped", which will never clear. I posted about this problem in the Viper v3 thread here: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte...8-rom-viper4g-3-0-0-beyond-4.html#post5887822.

Thank you again for the help!
