Help Possible to Change Phone Number?

I recently was given my sister's old Admire, out of service of course, use it just for messaging friends. I wanted to use 24SMS to message a friend who lives in another country but the problem is, it sends the message with my sister's old no longer in use number. Is there any way to have the number changed to a different one? Possibly the one I got from the App Text+?

It appears the phone is CDMA so you should be able to call the carrier and ask the phone be activated in your name with a new number.....if I understand correctly.

Yeah thats the only way to get a new number, you call and get the service activated under a new account. Unless you use an app like text plus or text now etc etc... To text. Those appa give you a number you can use to text from the app, and google talk combined with groove ip lets you make free wifi calls

Ok, thanks guys. I'm not looking to activate the phone, just use it for wifi texting. I'll look into those free calls however, thanks for the info again.
