Today at work, my device was stolen. I had been doing a lot of rooting and ROM switching on my device, and this time around, hadn't gotten to installing any apps such as Lookout. I did some searching, and all I could find was apps and measures that require you to not only install the app (which can be done remotely), but open the app and activate it, create a username and password, and/or respond to a series of texts.
Are there any other methods of finding a stolen device that is still on? Any methods that don't require having to activate and interact with an app after installation; that can be installed and activated remotely?
I was thinking that there should be an addition to Android that can only be used with the assistance of the device's carrier. Something that can override GPS, WiFi, data, airplane mode, and network toggle settings to give the carrier any possible location details. I suggest of course that it be through the carrier because that kind of remote access to a device would not be cleared to give out freely, and through the carrier, they can verify who is trying to locate the device.
Any suggestions, or input?
