Snooker ... that's like billiards? While I whiled away many an hour in my youth in the local billiard parlors (aka pool halls ) I can't say that I ever played snooker.

Yes, similar to billiards. Although I'm not sure what 'billiards' means in the US. In the UK it was a game played with 2 white balls and a red.
Snooker's an evolution of that game, played with 15 reds, and seven coloured balls. Very popular in the UK.

There's also 'bar billiards', but that's quite a different game.
