How do I do it?
1. Dial *#*#4636#*#*
2. Select Phone info
3. Near the bottom, change Set preferred network type from WCDMA preferred to GSM auto (PRL).

What do these settings mean?

touch and hold on home screen, widgets, settings then pick mobile data.

Well mine says HSDPA:9 but according to Wikipedia this is 3G

Would GSM(AutoPRL) 2G preferred if low signal strength help save battery in low signal areas?

Mzpresto, yes.

Davdi, I'm not sure. I don't think the issue is a matter of signal strength as availability of EDGE vs. 3G/HSPDA.
