Turn on Developer options and then you can wake phone with the fingerprint scanner.

Umm, can't you do that without Developer Options enabled as well? I thought the entire point of the fingerprint scanner was to wake + unlock the device in one press.

That works, but op is looking for a way to turn it off without using the power button

With the latest version of Nova Launcher (v5.0) you can define a gesture (I use swipe up) that turns the screen black and sets the screen timeout to five seconds.
