Power Off mode Wildfire S how much time?

I fully charged my Wildfire S then put it in Power Off mode. I turned it on after a week and the battery was just about dead, it let me power up, told me to charge then died. Is this normal, I really only want the phone for emergencies and one App.

Is it possible that even whilst in Power Off mode the phone was using power for certain applications.

Thanks you it would help to know about this before I have to E-Bay a brand new phone.
