PowerAMP audio player !!

I had an iphone.. there are a ton of apps in the app store priced around the same price as this and a LOT of them priced higher.

I had one as well and I agree there are a lot of higher priced apps. I found that at least among my friends and myself $0.99 apps were bought without much thought but anything over that and people paused, considering if they were worth the extra cost. Maybe we're just cheap bastards.

I tried WinAmp and was not overly impressed with it myself. It's a personal preference thing though. To me $5 isn't that much when you consider that it's big competitor is probably MixZing and that's $8.

Correct, it's all preference. If you feel MixZing is the benchmark then I can see you grabbing PowerAMP without hesitation.

Ditto - not impressed with WinAmp, and although I do like the design and features of PowerAmp, I'm leaning towards Mixzing myself. It seems to have most, if not all features that PowerAmp has, plus other features such as

- free ad-based version (does not expire)
- built-in video player (great for playing MP4s)
- Pandora-like ability to rate songs and get song recommendations
- Equalizer settings can be applied to individual songs, individual albums or all songs; customizable number of bands and dB range
- full version includes a tag editor

I also seem to have better luck with Mixzing picking up my album art, but maybe that's just me. :) The full version is a bit more pricey at $7.99 (vs. $4.99 for PowerAmp) but for the extra features I think I'm willing to pay the difference. Right now I'm holding out to get a bit more feedback on both programs before I decide which to buy.

I had the full paid version of Mixzing, and after trying Poweramp I have switched over to Poweramp and uninstalled Mixzing. There isnt a huge difference in the features or performance between the 2 apps, but I prefer the look of Poweramp and the sound from its equalizer over Mixzings. Poweramp also seems to run a bit faster and smoother, but that may be my imagination.

Personally, I would never buy MixZing because I had a bad experience with the dev. The free version of MixZing is locked down feature-wise if I remember correctly and doesn't have things like player controls on the lock screen.

Just to help save some people some time (since I just spent that time).

Mixzing free isn't just ad based. It's feature limited too. When I turned on lock screen controls, it said enjoy it during the limited time trial, but I'd need to upgrade to keep that feature.

That was a deal breaker for me. Uninistalled.

Hmm, the only features I've noticed that are not functional in the free version is the lock screen widget and the Tag Editor - it asks me to upgrade if I try to use either one. Both are clearly stated as full version features, along with no ads. The desktop widget has three sizes (large art, small art and "text only", which displays the artist and title). All three have Play, Previous and Next Song controls. If you have WidgetLocker installed you can get around the lock screen widget limitation in the free version by just placing the desktop widget on your WidgetLocker lock screen.

Again, it comes down to personal preference. Ad-supported and locked down does not beat $5 for ad-free and the features I want. My only real gripe with PowerAmp at this point is that it doesn't download album art properly in some cases. I'm trying to find a way to change the album art from within the app. It's not a huge deal to me though. I'll wait until the trial expires and then I'll probably pony up the $5.

I had similar problems with album art being recognized in PowerAmp, while Mixzing recognized my existing art right away. I've yet to figure out how to get PowerAmp to recognize my existing art, or add missing art. For me, having a combination audio/video player with most of the features of other players has me leaning in Mixzing's direction, so I agree it is just a matter of personal taste.

Yeah, I rarely, if ever play videos on phone. If they do they're video podcasts and the podcasting app I've got has built in video playback so that's not an issue. I play audio files exclusively. It may be a feature they add down the road though.

Oh shit I noticed when you plug in the headphone jack (like I did in my car last night) it just starts playing! Effing win!

I shelled out the 5 bucks the second I had the chance. So worth it!

Hopefully I can get this on my Archos 70 250GB when it comes out!

Hi guys....new user of the site and a well drummed up user of the HTC desire. LOVING the android phones...and now on to the app in question....

Basically, Ive been using Doubletwist primarily because it has software for my mac that allows me to drop across my music/podcasts etc. Has there been any rumours of an addition of something similar with Poweramp.

Also, I think this may have been answered but....I put on (to the trial version of PA), an album that was a compilation mix album...to be more precise, Annie Mac 2010....when I looked in the album list, the album had been broken down into all the singles and not as the album......is there something I can do to avoid this?!?!

Cheers

Loving the detailed responses. MASSIVELY helpful!

Forget my 2nd question! The paid for version has taken care of it!!

TO any others out there, this app is truly a revelation with the android...now all I need to do is getting a bigger memory card to store plenty of music. BRILLIANT APP and well worth the money!

The only thing I like about Poweramp over all the other players I've tried (winamp, mixzing, default) is that poweramp will let me play based on folder. But I don't know if that's worth $5.

What I mean is, when I make a folder in my /Music folder, such as /Music/Trance...I can view the folder and play the contents of that folder, and that folder alone...

All the other damn apps group all my songs together and try to separate them by artist and album and crap.

Why can't any of the other apps do that?? It's so frustrating.

With no podcast, streaming, or video, $5 is way too steep for me. It's not that its expensive per say, but when you look at other programs which are cheaper, and used far more often (Launcher Pro Plus), I just can't justify it when its lacking popular features other free/ad supported media apps have.

dl'd the trial and have messed with it for just a few minutes and it is awesome so far. I will seriously consider buying it once the trial is over. Works flawlessly on my Eris so far. There is a setting to automatically set the album covers the first time it scrolls thru and it hasn't missed yet. I really like 3(cubed) but this is a cut above that.

update: messed around with this last nite and I love it. Works flawlessly so far. I will definitely be buying this once the trial runs out unless something better comes along in that time. Going to play around with it a couple more days first. Love the equalizer controls and the volume control button. If the dev stays involved (which sounds like he is), it will definitely be worth the $5.

I'm liking what I see, but I'm having a problem with the folder view.

On the Folders screen no folders are shown, just the message 'folders are not available. Please make sure SD card is mounted, USB storage connection is turned off, and Music Folders are selected in settings.'

All that is correct and the Music Folders selected are: mnt/sdcard/MP3

The Library shows all the tracks on the phone.

'Rescan folders' shows 10 folders found. Yet the Folders screen remains empty as above.

Any suggestions how to fix this would be welcome please :)

lol I noticed that while I was at work today. I went ahead and bought it... mixzing was cool but the UI on this and the performance is better to me.

I use WinAmp, which syncs wirelessly. I dunno if they have that for Mac though as it is called "Win"Amp.

Downloaded PowerAmp today. Simply amazing!

The only thing I can't figure out is how to exclude the folders I have marked as .nomedia folders.

Any advice?

I have the same problem. Interestingly, this only aplies to my external SD, tried adding stuff from the phone's internal memory, ringtone mps3, works fine. Was wondering, if the filesystem of my card would be the culprit, just took the card from my old Nokia, and lobbed it into my Galaxy S...

As a player, works flawlessly. Even understands the signals of the Nokia 3,5mm extension cord/headset. Now I just need to attach some sort of payment method to the Market... Wonder if they take checks? :D
