POWERBALL WINNER

So in the UK, we had a record £66 million jackpot, which was shared between two winners. One of those winners has successfully claimed their prize, but for a while the other winning ticket holder had not come forward.
Then a few days ago, a woman produced a ticket with the numbers, but with the date and bar code obliterated, apparently due to the ticket being put in a washing machine. Hmmm.....
And now there are many more people coming forward with apparently damaged, or lost tickets, claiming they had the winning numbers.
But you have to realise that the lottery organisers already know where those winning tickets were bought, and time of day, so it should be easy enough to verify a claim. I suppose you can't blame people for trying it on.

what happens to them? when they try to fake a claim..
charged with attempted theft? or forgery?

Well IMO technically it's fraud, so these people could find themselves in trouble. I mean trying to gain money by deception, or something like that. Don't know, I'm not a lawyer.
