Root Preparing to root and flash -newbie alert

Newbie
Hi,

I;ve been lurking around for sometime reading threads, looking at roms, waiting until my contract was up before i started seriously considering playing with my phone. Well that time has come. My DHD is currently
Android 2.3.5
Sense 3.0
Software number 3.13.61.5

It was locked to the orange network but i have it unlocked and a different sim in it. I have backed up my contacts to my SD card so think i am just about ready.
My plan is to put blackout ICS on it as when i get my upgrade i will be passing this on to my wife and think she might like the the widgets you get with Sense.
So the first step is to get root sorted out. Am i correct in thinking i don't need to manually downgrade anything as the current version of AAHK will do all that for me?

Yes. AAHK will take care of the downgrade. I recommend you run AAHK on a Mac or if your on Windows, use a Ubuntu Linux LiveCD. Download AAHK, and read the manual. Make sure you don't have a virus scanner or firewall on when you download and unzip AAHK. AAHK uses an exploit to root DHD's and this is detected as a virus and deleted. This will result in an error when you try to root later.

All for now. Read the manual, ask questions here. Will be checking in regularly for the next 6 hours.

Will check the manual myself to see if there are any matters specific to your model.

Thanks thats good to know i am at least on the right path. I've got a linux usb key that i can use. I assume the rooting is the hardest part and one i
ve got a rom manager on there, switch between different ones is pretty straightforward so i can try out a few variants.

With Linux, best to use a CD to avoid USB driver issues, well that is thecadvitgiven by attn1. Personally, I see no reason why a USB key should not work.

As for flashing ROM's, don't use a ROM Manager. Let's do it the cold fashioned way. ROM Managers result in plenty of bad flashes. Once you are rooted, will post the instructions on how to flash the ROM, depending on which one you choose.

Ok, so it said that it needed to downgrade my phone, went through several rebooting and got to the hboot screen and then just stayed there. So i rebooted and the phone started up normally. I am not sure if it actually perfomed the downgrade or not as the messages from aahk said to select continue when that wasnt an option. I assume if i just re-run it again it will tell me if everything is ok.

If the phone downgraded you need to run AAHK attempts second time.

What version are you running? You can check Settings > About > Software Information about.

It says 2.3.5
sense 3.0 so i guess that means it didnt downgrade?

So what i did was use the ubuntu live cd, downloaded the aahk.zip, and ran the ace.hack.sh script. that then said about downgrading and then asked if i wanted to download a rru, which i said yes to but i am not convinced it downloaded anything. will try again and see what happens.
How easy is it to brick your phone at this point?

No, the downgrade was not effected.
Chance of bricking your phone... I would say it is small, but I don't have any statistics or anything.

At your next attempt, copy and paste the info on the terminal.

You have obviously done your reading, you ask the right questions. For people like you, this will all be easy.
