Root Preparing to Root

I've been reading on here for months, and have learned a bunch about the Charge but was never comfortable enough to root but now I have found the guide here: http://www.toms-world.org/android

This is what I am looking for

1. Gain root access to do things that require it: ie: Titanium Backup
2. Increase battery life
3. Ability to debloat the phone
4. Make it run better/faster

Some things I don't yet understand though:

1. Without loading a new Kernel, phone would go back to stock recovery upon reboot. Not sure what this means or how it affects what I've done

2. By getting rid of the bloatware from Verizon (or much of it) what can I expect for increase in battery life and what can I expect for speed difference?

3. Just to be clear, I don't lose my data on the phone if all goes well, right?

Hope this all makes sense, I am tired so I may not have done a great time explaining everything.

It depends on how you root. If you flash a complete .tar file it will include a kernel so this will not be a concern. I suggest for the first time you look for a complete one flash package... Toms World is great!

2. By getting rid of the bloatware from Verizon (or much of it) what can I expect for increase in battery life and what can I expect for speed difference?

The bloatware is really just annoying because it normally cannot be deleted. Selecting a debloated file will help as the dev will have erased them for you.
Battery life will improve based on power management. Some of the devs do a real good job at lessening the power and then increasing better than stock. This is one reason why you will see a great increase in batt life.

3. Just to be clear, I don't lose my data on the phone if all goes well, right?

It depends... if you flash a file that requires you to wipe cache and dalvik then all your stuff is gone. You can backup to a degree without root. Use google contacts, google plus for photos, and if I remember sms backup plus works without root. One of the text message apps does. And use the google market and amazon market for all your apps as these system will remember your selections. That should take care of most things. Or you can find a .tar file that does not require wiping of the cache and then use titanium backup.

Hope this all makes sense, I am tired so I may not have done a great time explaining everything.

Let me know if you need any help.

Sorry it took me a while to get back to this, I was planning on rooting WITHOUT loading a custom ROM. Just simply do the steps to get root access and then go to work disabling and uninstalling bloatware items.

As much as I like the idea of custom ROM's, it seems the further I dig into them the more things I see where it makes some things better and breaks others. Am I wrong?

How to root your Droid Charge

I've included instructions on how to root your phone with and without loading a custom kernel on the phone. The instructions will even root the stock ROM that you get on the phone or via the OTA. No need to load another ROM.

DONE! Rooted today with no issues, except it took a while for it to find the drivers from Windows Update so Odin would connect. After that, easy peasy.

I downloaded Titanium Backup from the market and uninstalled pretty much the entire list of apps Tparky put up. Will buy the Pro version tonight so I can support the author and gain more functionality.

Great guide Tparky, thank you.
