EM, are you thinking about upgrading to the m9?
I'm insanely happy with my M8.

To move me away from it will take something really interesting.

5" @ 1080p leaves me with 4.7" + buttons, and a little bit more real estate in immersive mode - I really find that and the overall M8 size to really fit my sweet spot for use and carry.

But - I've never met an upgrade I didn't like. :D

I have an open mind at this point.

I plan on grabbing one launch day if the specs are what they say they are supposed to be GSM Arena Specs- M9 My only disappointment is the lack of dual-sim capability (I can still hope though!). I go overseas a lot and this would be very useful to me. Not sure if it'll be the Sprint branded version or GPE edition.

I plan on keeping my M8 around for awhile as a backup, IMO it has to be one of the best phones I have ever owned, though I am on my second one after a hammer dropped on the back of the first one. To it's credit it continued to work after the hammer, with the casing and the screen flexed.

I was hoping they would say something at CES, but all they had there was the HTC RE and no info on the M9.

I thought the GPE program was dead?

I hope there is a phablet version. At this point though, I doubt there is.

They stopped selling the M8 GPE just a bit ago, and there was no S5 GPE (Samsung dropped out of the program) , but Google has been very quiet about future releases.

After the new crop of phones hits I expect we'll know if GPE is asleep or dead.

I think GPE was great on paper but they didn't carry out the program well enough for everyone to understand or participate.

The only way, in my opinion, for the GPE phones to work is to have them sold and updated by the vendors.

A whole lot of confusion happened over who pushed and pulled what with the last HTC update on that. I think both sides tried to be clear, but this is the mobile industry where people fly off demanding Nexus One-like updates when they hear GPE. It can't work that way.

Yeah, I'm anxiously waiting on GPE status since that would be my first choice. If it is in fact dead, I might still go with the dev edition.

M9 name leaked on the HTC website, but no mention of an m9 plus. Indicative of the lack of a plus variant?

What exactly does the developer edition get you?
They're shipped with the bootloader and GSM sim unlocked.

As for the bootloader, depending on the carrier, you may be able to unlock using HTCdev.com. In any case, the developer edition is still s-on.

As you've used it, I don't need to tell you, but for others - you can remove the encrypted signature security protection on most all HTCs using Sunshine s-off. No idea but not unlikely that a delay may occur for Sunshine after the M9 launch to sort out the latest hboot.

If you mean the so-called heating issue, there's no debate.

A single, unsubstantiated rumor was printed in the Korea Business Times on December 4, 2014.

The story was repeated for months with each telling adding more intrigue.

I posted at a number of news blogs that they were full of it and had no basis for babbling.

Then the new meme happened - an attribution that AnandTech said it. Except, no they did not.

Qualcomm is a fabless supplier - others build their chips under license. The biggest is TSMC. But they're not the only ones.

Samsung also makes Qualcomm chips for their phones. Qualcomm stock dropped over the rumor.

From there the math is really simple.

This is overlooked by the idiot news bloggers who think that they're calling a horse race and are unaware of their ignorance.

If by debate you meant - will it use the 810? - then I find that responding to the heat thing was more fun.

The 8core MediaTek vs the Snapdragon 810 is interesting.

Given that everyone hates MediaTek, the press is likely to doom the phone if true.

Should the same processor (hilariously called a chipset by idiots in the press) be used in a Nexus phone, then it will be a breakthrough and MediaTek will have come of age. They did that with the entire LG brand lol.

I was referring to the heating rumors. I read somewhere that the G Flex 2 was being throttled, indicating heat issues at higher speeds. But again, I don't know how credible any of this is.

Anyone want to take a guess?

"Something HUGE is coming from HTC. Imagine [number][big thing] in space. And then [math term] that by [number]. #Madlib"

I'll take a crack at at:
Imagine one star in space and then multiply that by 2.

Alternatively, as other tech sites have indicated, it could simply be referencing a phablet or tablet.

Or maybe they're promoting Samsung now.
Imagine one galaxy in space and then multiply that by two. HTC is marketing the new Galaxy s6 and s6 edge. It makes more sense :)

All processors in all devices and PCs throttle under extreme heat.

It's part of the fact that quantum effects are occurring in semiconductors.

The unwashed press has made much ado about nothing.

Heat comes from the total system. Extreme heat comes from the total system and can result from bad apps, a bad battery, bad silicon, a bad screen, or a bad kernel.

Each device must be evaluated on a case by case basis.

The LG case you're referencing is the misappropriation of what Anandtech actually said that I mentioned earlier. In that case, the device was left baking under show lighting.

Nothing to see here really.

As Early stated the heating issue was someone whispering in the shadows "don't tell anyone" to a reporter, who without any substantiating evidence took the story and ran with it. Other outlets picked it up and the great centrifugal false rumor machine was spinning putting out 9 G's. The 810's run at around 30c, which is in line with other previous processors. In some instances it was even a little cooler.

M9 is definitely getting the 810, the M9 + may get the MediaTek in the Asian release, but will most likely still get the 810 everywhere else. the MT6795 is a powerful processor, but it lacks a bit on the GPU side. It's just too bad Qualcomm didn't have time to build a 64 bit Krait SOC, but the ARM is looking pretty good. Still maybe next year we will see a 64 Bit Krait with a **wishing on a star** Maxwell 256-core GPU mated to it.

And they have come a long way in the last few years. Doubt it will be on par with the Ultra Pixel' slight sensitivity. Just hoping we can get a good balance.
