prevent accidental data

I don't have a data plan so when I consume data over 3G, I really pay. I already know how to turn off data on the phone.

The problem is it's too easy to enable 3G by accident. In particular, the notifications bar makes it too easy - you know, the window you pull open by swiping your finger from top to bottom. When open, this window contains buttons that toggle wi-fi, bluetooth, GPS, 3G and ring/vibrate. (See the attached image.) Twice I have accidentally enabled 3G.

I would really like to prevent data from being enabled easily. Any of the following would be fine:

  • Remove 3G from the notification bar.
  • When enabling data, confirm my selection with a message box "Are you sure you want to enable 3G? OK/Cancel"
  • Disable 3G entirely.
Thanks,
Cam

Go to menu>settings>network>mobile network>ap names then delete the access points. Even enabling mobile internet will not let you connect to anything.

On a side note, 3G is not your internet connection. You can have 3G enabled without being connected to internet.

Try turning off background data. That way, you can only use data when you choose to. Apps will not update until you make them.

Not sure what phone you're in, but it's in settings, data somewhere.

This seems like the best solution and thank you for contributing. I found the list of access points but I can't see how I can delete them. There is only the option to reset to default. I tried that and one AP disappeared leaving 2 and neither of them had a bullet beside showing that it's selected. But then when I enabled the icon in the pull down, I could load a web page (and I'm not connected to wi-fi).

I guess I need some education on terminology. I can access the Internet through wi-fi or through the cellular network. I thought that access through the cellular network was called 3G. See the image I attached to my first post. This is from the manual that came with my phone. It says, "3G connection". Is the manual wrong or am I misunderstanding something?

You can connect to internet with 3G turned off. 3G is just a wireless technology terminology, if I remember correctly it stands for third generation (with analog as 1st and GPRS as 2nd). 3G connection means that the wireless technology used can support 3G speeds, and that's it. You have the 3G antenna on, but turning 3G antenna on does not mean you are connected to the internet.

So depends on what the toggle actually does, the manual may be wrong or right. I have a toggle that switches from 3G to 2G, so the manual may actually be correct in it being a 3G toggle.
