Help Prevent Android from marking email as read

Hello,

I want to be able to read all my email on the email server, but not mark it as read on the server. If I could configure Android (I've tried Gmail and AquaMail) to work like a POP server, then when I go home and download email on my PC (Thunderbird) then everything would show up as unread.

I had set up Thunderbird to use POP3 servers, but then when I read email on my PC, those emails would disappear from my phone. So, I switched Thunderbird on my PC to IMAP. Now if I read it on my phone, it will download as "read" on my PC making it easy to lose track of emails I need to respond to.

I know this isn't specifically an Android problem. I thought I would ask here to see what other people have done.

What about using Gmail's starring function to just designate mails you want to read again later?

Just some additional info. That function is available in the stock client on a Maxx 2 running Marshmallow as well.
