Previous Iphone owner made switch, Love it minus 1 problem

I just bought the Droid X yesterday. WOW I love all the options! Free App! Widgets! It's so much better of a phone. I love it.

Minus one thing.

Battery life. Dear god please help me with this. I'm going to have to return the phone if I can't get more than 5 hours out of the battery, and most of that I have the phone off, sitting on the desk next to me.

I look at the battery usage in settings and after a 4 hour stint of sitting never being touched it says 67% of the battery was used by the display! WTF? I literally unplugged it from the charger and never touched it for 4 hours. How is the display using 67% of the battery?

Anyone have some suggestions?

there is an app called juice defender which helps saves battery life.

also try lowering the brightness of the screen,
increase the update/sync time on apps, for example from 1hr to 4hr.
if you are using wifi turn off mobile internet.
turn off other services when not using them.

thats normal.. considering how big the screen is.. try lowering the brightness while indoors... but 4 hrs of life is just too little, is there an app usning just too much battery? blutooth and gps just drain the battery as well.

I'll try out the Juice Defender app.

It can't be the brightness of the screen because I have the screen off for 4 hours out of the 4 hours 10 mins the phone was off the charger (and fully charged when I took it off).

Is there any apps that show item per item what used the battery? Something is getting lumped in with the "Display" that obviously isn't the display.

I have Wifi, Bluetooth + gps turned off.

They say this phone has a 8 hour talk time? Could I have a bad battery maybe?

You do understand that the battery use figures are all relative to the amount of battery life used right? In other words, the data showing the screen having used 67% of battery doesn't mean that the screen caused your battery to drop from 100% to 33%. It means that the screen used 67% of whatever power was drawn down. If you only used 40% of the total battery (ie the battery was still at 60% capacity) - then the screen used 67% of that, or 26.8% of the battery.

If you were not doing anything with the phone, then it would make total sense that the screen was using the most power.

What you never told us was how much battery power was left or if you even charged it fully after getting it. I've also seen multiple accounts of how battery life in these types of phones gets better with a couple of charging cycles. That isn't suppose to be the case with these batteries, but I've seen it enough to believe it.

Just a quick observation about Android phones and battery life, especially when new or after an OS upgrade ... you are going to need to perform a complete charge cycle before you can get an idea about true battery life. I don't think it is a matter of conditioning the battery as much as it is 'educating' the phone to display the discharge rate accurately.

Let the battery drain completely, and I mean until the phone shuts itself off and then fully charge it using the supplied charger and not the USB cable. I think you find a marked improvement.

How many recharge cycles has the battery gone through? It needs at least two or three for the phone to read the battery properly.

In addition, when your phone's charging, as it reaches 90% or so, turn off the phone and then let it charge to full.
