Motorola Xoom UK price to be 'premium'

Motorola Xoom packing dual-core Android Honeycomb winds up the tension

The world's first Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet, the Motorola Xoom, is to be priced at a 'premium' according to Motorola.

The dual-core Motorola Xoom is due to launch in Q1 in the US.

}Speaking to T3 at a Motorola Xoom briefing Andrew Morley VP Marketing, Motorola, said: "It's clearly a premium device…and premium means it's going to cost too… we're pretty confident from all the research we've done that the price we're going to launch it at will be competitive."

Interestingly, Morley also hinted at additional wireless potential: "WiFi version is not announced, but that would be an interesting development".

I wonder what "competitive" means. I would go up to $799, but that would be it. The 32GB wifi only Ipad is $599, but has less ram and no camera, no flash.

Yup, this mean $600 plus....easy. No contract. Dude, I hope Motorola provides a good first impression. Motorola is basically spearheading the Android Tablet movement.

If you're willing to go up as $799, then I think you're good. I don't see it being over $799 for any model that would be down right craaaaaazy.

If this is Moto's plan for selling this thing then I can't see them doing very well competing against the iPad. For those who money is no object, sure. But for somebody like me pricepoint is a major selling point.

I hope this all isn't so because I really want to buy this product...only time will tell I guess.

Time for some knee jerk reactions...

Okay, first the rumors about MotoBlur being adding to the Xoom and now this $799 pricing. The Xoom will have to be renamed to Doom. I really can't imagine it being successful at this price point. I was figuring $500 would be my limit and it looks like I'm not even close.

Perhaps HTC will come to the rescue.

Man, ain't that a b#$%h!! i had my hopes up for a less than $600 price tag. If it's going to be closer to $800 then I guess Apple might just get my hard earned dollars. I know it's a flagship device and that it has the "latest and greatest" with respect to the hardware and software but still... I was hoping that they would sell for a much closer to wholesale price to get the bees buzzing and then price the next version a little higher to compensate for the cost of the original. Oh well, it was a nice dream while it lasted. Goodbye Xoom... Hello iPad (boohoo :(...)

You aren't kiddin'!!!!
There's absolutely NO reason for them to even think of considering to throw Blur on the Xoom.
DONT DO IT MOTO!!! I, along with many others will never forgive you

Wow...just wow. If that $799 price point holds at release, there will be a lot of empty Verizon stores. I had a limit of $500 personally, but you can buy a laptop computer for $800 or even less. In this economy... $800... really Moto????? If they even thought about gaining any people who had ipads or were on the fence, Moto's battleship just got sunk. I guess I am looking at an ipad2 unfortunately.

The Xoom might be out of my price range but I'm thinking other Android tablets will come around. That's what is great about Android....there's choices.

I'll agree that that's the great point to the android lifestyle, however, have you seen some of the other tablets on the drawing board or worse yet, the ones you can get right now? UGG!! Freaking terrible! Since the teaser video, the one with the stone tablets and so on, I thought, "Yes, Motorola is throwing their hat into this and it's gonna be awesome"!! Looks like I was right about that, but if that's the price they expect me to pay for the only credible android tablet to step up and David the iPad Goliath, then I'm afraid I can't be part of thae fight. I love android and have been drooling in anticipation of the Xoom for what feels like forever!! Unfortunately it looks like my t-shirt, pillow, desk at work, and driver seat of my car were covered with the worst kind of drool though, the saliva of disappointment.

Just remember,
UNsubsidized device prices are another ball game than 2 year contract prices.

The Xoom will be competitively priced.
It has to be.
The ipad is already at Verizon stores.

I will say....
I would pay more for a Xoom, knowing the hardware and OS behind the tablet!
As where you'd have to knock me unconscious to make me even hold an iPad LoL

I'm no fan of Apple, nor do I want an iPad but if purchasing one shows those morons at Moto/Verizon that it's price more than anything else that's going to drive sales then maybe in a couple years when android tablet software is somewhere in the Lollipop stage of development, then and only then, if the price is right, then I shall purchase my dream come to life.

On the bright side....this is all speculation until moto and/or verizon gives us the pricing. So there's still hope!!:D

I don't want to be on any 2 year contract paying who knows what a month in addition to the price of this tablet. Also you will have to PAY to get it upgraded to 4G when the time comes. This thing could get ridiculously expensive in a hurry. That is not even counting accessories..... I wanted this tablet really bad. How come the Adam can be $499 with just about the same hardware yet be so much cheaper????

It is overpriced when you compare it to the market leader. The 3G/32gb ipad is $70 cheaper and the 3G/64gb is only $30 more. Yes this is a better product but the price is not right.

MAP = Minimum Advertised Pricing.

I work with it all the time. It's because you've got professional full service places who promote products, have trained staff, and honor warranties. They have to sell at reasonable margins to stay in business. But they typically yield considerably happier customers. Best Buy is a good example. I know most of us techies don't think very highly of them, but lets face it, if there's a problem they'll usually take care of it.

Then you've got a guy with a pretty website, working out of his home, using his garage as a warehouse. He can sell at 5% margins with zero knowledge or service and steal LOTS of business away simply by having the lowest price on Google shopping. If something goes wrong, you're screwed. God help you if you want a return or exchange.

That's why MAP exists. Manufacturers WANT their equipment sold by full service places, so they establish a price that you cannot advertise below. In the case of the Xoom that is $799.

The good news is that dealers are welcome to sell at any price they want. They just can't advertise it. And furthermore very quickly there are idiots who will violate MAP on Friday afternoon, rake in sales all weekend, and get a stern warning on Monday morning.

Trust me, unless you're hideously impatient, you won't be paying $799 for your Xoom.
