Prime v. New Laptop

So who here is going to be buying this instead of a new laptop? The reason I ask is because my GF's laptop is on it's last legs, and she loves android stuff after I convinced her to switch phones.

She would most be using it for media related stuff, as her job is not really document/computer heavy, though I would like her to have the ability to create/edit Word documents if the need arises. What are the best options out there for that?

Thanks guys!

Tablets are still not laptop replacements. As far as it has come, Android is still a mobile OS. If she has a desktop and doesn't travel much, it wouldn't hurt. But you can't replace a real computer with an Android tablet, no matter what.

I'm going to try to replace my win 7 prof netbook w it. I think it is definitely possible. I will use it for mainly entertainment and light business. I haven't used polaris office, so we'll see if its up to the task. I think it will work for me. If it won't work well enough with light office type things, then I'll just remote connect to my desktop to get the job done. A co-worker found an app that let's us access our work software on our android phones, which includes inventory, customer accounts, the whole nine yards. So if ppl look into it enough, they may find answers to the areas they find lacking when it comes to the android os.

I would stay with a laptop bro good one like ASUS Brand :)

Tablet as of know not as powerful as laptop replacement unless you want to wait for the Prime..... which is Quad-Core processor :)

If you're talking about mostly entertainment/media use, email, Facebook etc. with some light Word or Excel work thown in, I would definitely recommend something like the Transformer. I've been trying to get my wife to give up her HP netbook for a year now, and I finally got her an iPad 2 so we'll see what she goes back to the laptop for.

Thanks, could you keep me posted on this? I just don't know what she would need a actual computer for over the, Prime.

Sure, I know she hasn't touched the laptop in the past week since she's had the iPad. The only thing that immediately comes to mind that might be a challenge is printing to our wireless printer, but I haven't tried that yet on the iPad although I believe it might be possible.

although many can agree with this statement it also comes down to WHAT DO YOU DO ON YOUR LAPTOP?

for the average person, who is gonna internet, view media, write some documents, then a laptop is waaaaay too much and a tablet will do just fine.

my mom, wife and wife's mom all fit into that category perfectly and they will get a tablet shortly.

for me though, i'm not 100% sold yet.
i'd like some more productivity out of the tablet rather than just consumption to be honest.
basic image editor - check
basic movie editor - not sure
ability to write meta tags to pics - not sure

not sure what else i would want to be honest so will probably get one :)

You could always use remote desktop on the TransPrime to make it a full screen Windows solution. There are still a few holes (including needing data for the rdp connection) but I plan on making my TransPrime my laptop replacement.

I tried using my Transformer+dock during the day instead of the HP Envy 14 that I usually use, and found it too limiting. What I missed mostly was a good way to post to Wordpress blogs, and in general switching from Twitter to the browser to an RSS reader, etc., was just too cumbersome for me in my typical daily use. So, now I mainly use the HP during the day and then the TF at night, when I'm in a much slower routine.

However, I can certainly see how someone could use just the TF+dock if they don't necessarily need to switch between running apps so quickly and often. That is, if they tend to do one task for longer periods of time, and don't need to create any kind of complex content, then I could see the TF+dock working quite well.

All,

Don't forget that Android is still in its first stages and will most likely have a much more intricate system after ICS.

ICS will be bringing a lot to the table, and having a prime will definately show you what android's potential will be in the next few years.

You can't do any of the file transfer and manipulation on an android device with an iPad, because oh yeah.... Apple is lazy with their OS, they want you to use an OS made for a phone and an iPod instead of a more intelligant OS for a Tablet. They just don't get it.

They think everyone doesn't know anything about OS' and that everyone is over the age of 60.

Im done with their "you can't do that" attitude, especially for the money you spend on their hardware and software.

To me for the price, you should be able to hack everything on it, and just have a backup image if something goes wrong.

Android is headed in the right direction... Period.

Prime is not a replacement for a laptop only user. But I have a desktop. I've never owned a laptop because I find them inherently limiting in all sorts of ways. I am getting the Prime instead of a laptop, and for any programs that require Windows, I will simply use remote desktop. Of course, you can't remote desktop without a network connection, but outside of my train ride, I'm 99% near wifi of some sort. And if I really feel it's necessary, I can either tether with my phone or get a mifi device.

In my world, tablet is for portable and desktop is for productivity. The laptop/netbook is useless to me.
