How do I get notifications on lock screen to show me texts or missed calls instead of 'private'? I don't want to have to open phone to see who its from.

You didn't say what phone is yours.

Instructions for Samsung Galaxy S7:

Settings > Lock Screen & Security > Notifications on Lock Screen > Content on Lock Screen > Show Content

This will show who the text or missed call is from without opening the phone.
