my husband recently purchased a new phone, and i am trying to set up his now deactivated Samsung Fascinate so that my son can use it as a "makeshift" ipod touch - music player and apps only. after my husband cleared what he needed from the Fascinate, he did the factory reset. initially i had problems bypassing the activation screen, but went in to the Verizon store, talked with the guys and they showed me how to bypass it. i discussed with them my plans for the phone, and they even went in to shut off the mobile data connection, and told me i should be able to just go in and set up google and be good to go, as long i was connected to wifi.
well, i've been trying to set up the google account for a couple days now and although i am connected to the wifi here at home, every time i try to log into google, it keeps telling me "can't establish a reliable data connection to the server...this could be a temporary problem or your phone may not be provisioned for data services. if it continues call customer care."
i don't know what the issue is. i know it's the correct username and password for google and i do not have 2-step verification set up. i know the phone is connected to wifi and has maintained connection, as i can use the google search function without an issue and obtain results!
i don't really want to do too much to the phone (ie "root" it), as we plan on keeping it as a backup in case something happens to one of our new ones. if that is the only solution, then i'm willing to consider it.
any thoughts, hints or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
