Problem trying to root galaxy s2

I want to apologize in advance but I have never rooted an Android before. Anyways I downloaded the latest version of Kies, Odin 3.09, and what I believe to be the correct version of the kernel that is to be used to root a Boost Mobile GC01 4.1.1 Galaxy S2(SXTP_Agat_BSTFL24-v0.2.0.tar). After using Odin to put the kernel onto my Android, I put my phone into the custom recovery as instructed. I had a problem, however, when I went to mounts and storage and then clicked mount USB storage. It gives me an error message that reads: E: Unable to write to ums lunfile (No such file or directory)

I cannot figure out what to do or even how to get my phone back to the prior state that it was in. Can somebody please be kind enough to give a total noob some help?
