Problem with Android getting numbers mixed up!

If you save a new contact with a number of 07712345678 and call this contact Joe, and then dial 07112345678 the phone says you are calling Joe, even though you are calling a different number! I have tried this on my phone which is an HTC legend and my friends which is an HTC Wildfire, both v2.2.

I believe this may be related to the error of texts going to the wrong contact. This has been a major problem for me as I send texts to my friend whose number begins 07886... but they often end up going to 07786... and the wrong recipient is threatening to go to the police!

I read your old thread. Try this:
Check the contacts on Gmail on your PC if everything is correct (assuming you are syncing to Gmail).
Delete the sms thread for the wrong number. Reboot.

If the above doesnt work, you may need to clear the contacts app cache. This will delete all contacts and redownload the data from Gmail if you sync there.

Thanks for the reply.

I have cleared and deleted and reset everything in the past bar a factory reset and nothing has worked before!

Plus the example I gave above is for made up numbers of made up people, and straight away it is confusing them thinking they are the same.

IMO there is a glitch somewhere in the software and its quite annoying!

Yeah. My friends number is 07886******, the one they are sometimes going to is 07786******, with the stars representing the same numbers.

I think, barring a phone reset, what you need to do is to clear all SMS app and phone data together at the same time and reboot. The phone remembers that wrong number and has related it to the name. Somewhere in the data of those two apps is a message, or a call log where that number is still saved under that name. If that doesnt work, I'd think you'd have to consider a phone reset.

OK. How do I do that?

Phone reset only worked for a few moments. As soon as it booted up a few minutes and synced and read the SD card, the same thing happened again.

I will use a combination of twitter via SMS, gmail to vtext.com and "new message" sms to communicate with my loved one. What a waste of time and energy, though.

Menu>Settings>applications>all apps tab>look for phone and messages, clear data on both. You'll lose all contacts and sms saved though.

I did the above. No change. I did not lose contacts or sms. In fact, in "messages" data was greyed out so I could not clear the data.

What phone and what carrier do you have? What region do you live in? Have you spoken to your carrier about this?

The phone number format is unfamiliar to those of us in the U.S.

Sprint Epic 4G (1st gen), Alabama, USA. Spoke to my carrier and friend's carrier (verizon). Sprint disabled 'picturemail' but then my friend received nothing; she had no idea I was trying to text her. So I called Sprint and they turned picturemail back on.

Standard phone format for USA XXX-XXX-XXXX or XXXXXXXXXX

Your sprint email is XXXXXXXXXX@pm.sprint.com
Your verizon cell email is XXXXXXXXXX@vtext.com

Once again, when I initiate an SMS with my friend on a different carrier, she replies and it has the above formatted return address even though i sent it as a standard 10-digit SMS.

If I reply to her reply (the most convenient method most of us do), then she gets a message stating there is a picture mail message waiting for her at web_address_example.com. She has a texting phone only so obviously this stops the conversation.

I am rooted but have stock Android EI22. Nothing has changed in over a year so I don't know why this is happening.

I factory reset my phone (reluctantly), deleted phone and messaging data and it still happens. Her address is not in my gmail contacts incorrectly; i've deleted it and re-entered it, in fact.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated since I don't want my friend to have to change her number.

I have looked for 'text routing' apps or similar but can't find anything that will work.

For now, I am not replying to her; I am initiating new message even though it is difficult and I forget and hit reply in which case she gets the picturemail alert.

Please help.

Sam

I discovered when I started composing new message that it would suggest the incorrect data (her cell email causing the problems), with the word other next to it, so I know the problem is in my phone or with synced data somehow. When I search for it on contacts it doesn't show up. When I use a third party app, it finds it. The app allows me to select and delete it.

When I compose new message it does not suggest it anymore. When my friend replies or I back out and go back into messaging, the wrong address is there again. Please help
