Help problem with auto rotation

maryJ

Newbie
hi my galaxy s phone has suddenly stopped rotating the screen when i turn it & it' not only that but when I want to play such games in which you move your character by moving your phone , it doesn't move at all :(. can any one help me ?

The autorotation is on . I even calibrated it for some times . But it didn't change
How did you calibrate it ? The phone should be lying flat on a table with LCD facing towards sky.

Another possibility is that you have some extra launcher like ADW or Go Launcher which have might have their own settings for Auto Rotation.

I calibrate my phone just the way you said. I don't I have any other launcher. How should I know if I have one ?

Now I start doubting your accelerometer inside the phone. Can you install a simple app "Bubble" from Android Market and check if the the bubble moves in the app when you rotate your phone ? It's a simple Bubble Level app.

If it works, then a format/factory reset might solve your problem otherwise a fresh install of the ROM/firmware will do the job.

Unfortunately there are still rough corners (like this one) around Android.

Ok, dial *#0*#

Your phone should goto a test menu. Touch the Sensor button (exactly in the middle of screen) and then on next screen, rotate your phone (tilt it as well). You should see a black circle with a red needle. Look at the top of your screen, you should be able to see Accelerometer Sensor readings. These x,y and z should change as you move the phone.

This will ensure your hardware is OK, if not then you are out of luck.

First of all I really thank you for helping me with my problem.i've been really frustrated these past few days.Well, the bubbles don't move. & when I go to the test page , there are no x,y & z when I rotate my phone.there are just numbers for proximity & light sensor. I see the black circle & the red needle but there are no numbers.could it be a problem with my hardware ? If yes do you think it can be repaired ? I was happily working with my phone & there was no falling down on the ground or in water or anything & I suddenly saw that it just doesn't rotate !

Is this GT-I9000 Galaxy S or what ?

Also please mention your firmware version, if you are not sure how to check it, goto

Settings--> About Phone

I am interested in Model Number, Firmware version and Baseband version

This is most likely the result of some corrupted file in your phone's software because the *#0*# test also relies on the firmware.

The model number is GT-I9000
Firmware 2.2.1
Base band I9000JXJPF
I'm constantly downloading files through wifi with my phone.can it be some corrupted file downloaded in my phone ? & also I do have lots of programs on my phone.

Your contacts and SMS can be saved easily. Also the installed programs can be backed up and restored.

Do you feel adventurous to upgrade your firmware to Gingerbread ? I am personally using XXJVK firmware and it is very stable and smooth as compared to Froyo.

I don't know how much techy you are, but if you are good at using computer and can follow step by step guide, you can do it.

I can assist you, just PM me your MSN or Skype ID and I can have a sitting with you.

I did some more research on this issue and it seems that (for some people) even flashing a new firmware/ROM did not solve the problem.

The reason for this problem is most probably some corrupted sensor calibration data files. So the solution is to recalibrate the sensors.

There are two requirements

1) You will need ADB (Android Debug Bridge), you can download it from Google
2) You will need to root your phone (using Super One Click or ChainFire root)

once ADB installed and you have a rooted phone, you can try re-calibration as follows:

adb.exe shell
su
# /system/bin/sensorcalibutil_yamaha

If you get errors on your phone like "msmachdep_Init failed" and "calibration utilities failed", then you need to delete the file “ms3c_yamaha.cfg“ in data/system. This file resides in your phone so you will need a Root Explorer App to explore the root areas and delete this system file.

I am sure this will solve your problem.

thank you very much for your information. i 'm sorry i was on a trip & couldn't read here earlier.well now i have some more problems. again suddenly & w/o any special happening (just that the weather was really cold) it wrote on the screen on my phone " safely removing internal sd card" and then the screen went black but the two keys' light were on. i had to take out the battery & turn it on again .then all my messages , contacts saved on phone memory , notes and memos were gone & the widgets on the screen were back to the they i bought my phone. then i couldnt get to my media files on the phone. now i can reach my media files but when someone calls my phone it starts vibrating & doesnt stop until i turn it off. and i cant answer the phone call either. i just can find out who called me by looking into history.and every now and then its screen goes black and i have to turn it off and after i turn it on all the messages and etc are gone again.i practically cant use my phone now .and i bought my phone online and it doesn't have a gurantee or anything. do you know what should i do now ? i've been so desperate with my phone. i'm good with computers but not very well acquainted with how it is with cell phones. i'm sorry this became too long. do you think i cansolve my problem by doing as you said ?

Well, all these problems are due to corrupted firmware, first thing you can try is a "Factory Reset" from Settings--> Privacy --> Factory Data Reset

This should hopefully work and if it does not, then you have to re-install (or flash) new firmware into your phone.

Flashing the firmware is easy and I have done it several times. You just need to follow the steps in the exact order.

Now there are two options, either I will provide you a good guide (on a website) or I can spare some time to have a chat session and I can guide you step by step.

As a self assessment, have a look at the following webpage and let me know how difficult it seems to you ?

How to use Odin to upgrade to Froyo from Eclair - Samsung Galaxy S Forums : Galaxy S2 S II Forum

thank you for your help... well i did a factory reset & the auto rotation is back ... do you think i will still need to change my firmware ?

Congratulations - No need to re-install firmware if current firmware is working OK.

Personally I have found Gingerbread far better in terms of stability and smooth operation than Froyo.

Now you should prepare to install a new ROM.

First check if you are able to go into Download and Recovery modes, turn off your phone and press Home and Vol-Down together and while holding these keys presses, turn on the power.

You should see a yellow triangle with exclamation mark. Now release the Home and Vol-Down, pull out battery and you can exit from Download mode.

Now you will just need Odin and the Firmware you want to install. Follow the link I provided you earlier. Flashing the new firmware is easy and you can find many guides on internet.

It goes into the downloading mode
I'm sorry but can we have a chat session or something &you guide me through the steps ?

Good to know that Download mode is not locked on your handset.

I already suggested for a chat session, check your PM.

You will need the following before we can start actual work.

1) Samsung Android Drivers or Kies installed so that your phone is detectable and usable as a USB Device.

2) Odin Software

3) The ROM which you want to flash

4) Data cable

i tried the *#0*# thing and the the magnetic sensor seems to be working, that black circle has a blue line which moves and at certain point whole screen goes grrn and the phone vibrates, but then i do the image test and nothing,i don't really know what that means, but i'd really like to solve this auto rotation problem.

P.S i have Samsung Galaxy S2
