Root Problem with Clockwork

rt1946

Lurker
New OSF, GEN1 , Android 2.1-update1, B10 Firmware, Clockwork 3.0.1.4

Rooted and (eventually) installed Clockwork.

However when I boot into Recovery and get the Clockwork menu any option that I select results in the screen clearing, a pretty "Top Hat" logo and absolutely nothing else.

Menu and power buttons just go back to clockwork main menu.

Only way out is to remove the battery.

Anyone else seeing this?

Any ideas/suggestions gratefully received (while I still have some hair left)

Richard.

How did you install Clockwork? What guide did you follow? Are you using Home, Back & Volume buttons to navigate the menu?

Installed clockwork most ways, ROM manager, Recovery Manager and lastest attempt was via a terminal. Most times everything worked fine. All the navigation keys within clockwork work ok, just nothing happens when I select an action.

I've tried 3.0.1.4 and 3.0.0.6 with the same effect.

Interestingly I've just flashed the Stock recovery image back to the phone and started recovery. All I got was a white square with FTM in it.

Not exactly sure what the Stock recovery should do but that doesn't sound right to me.

I'm beginning to suspect a problem with the phone firmware, but I'm not sure if this is a deliberate action to stop users upgrading or what.

Anybody have any idea what will happen if I try the GEN1 - GEN2 TPT upgrade........... the phone works so I don't want to brick it.

Richard.

FTM (I think Field Test Mode?) means no Recovery.....you wiped that when you flashed Stock ROM.

I think TPT is probably good, as it wipes your phone completely, well almost....., and includes a ClockworkMod Recovery.

Modaco thread here has full instructions, with several choices.....including gen1-gen2 all-in-one TPT's:

These are all in one rom + gen2 radio firmware + clockworkmod installs for 'Gen1' ZTE Blades & Orange San Franciscos which were sold with Android 2.1 (Eclair). They will upgrade your phone to Gen2 radio firmware, install the rom & the latest ClockworkMod all in one step, even on unrooted phones.

Check out this post also, contains step-by-step procedure.

Thanks for your reply.

In answer to my last question It gives you a brilliant phone.

Worked a treat, very simple using the "all in one" GSF zip file.

Took about 10 minutes max.

But still no working Clockwork !!!!!

Going through the Recovery power up sequence it boots to Clockwork 3.0.2.7

BUT............ absolutely nothing works! battery out to get the phone back.

What is going on here?

Anyone?

I would download Rom Manager, if you don't already have it, and flash Clockwork Recovery from Menu......Confirm Phone Menu/select the ZTE Blade.

should re-flash 3.0.2.7, hopefully it will work, and then re-boot into Recovery to check.....

It should over-write the Recovery Partition, and hopefully clear any corruption.

Edit, there is a new CWR 5.0.0.1 now available which can be flashed using Rom Manager:

Thanks for your thoughts

Well I've tried 4 different versions so trying another is not going to harm anything eh?

What is disconcerting is that they all behave in exactly the same way :-

Select an option - any option, and the screen clears, top hat pops up and then ......... nothing. I'm sure it has to be something with my phone, but you can't exactly ask for an exchange coz it won't run an unsupported (by Orange) app!!!!!

Richard.

Sorry, I had not noticed that you had installed/flashed via RM before.....:o

I am stumped so, must be HW related, and as you say, catch 22 with Orange.

Sorry, I will research further, as I am sure you will too.

Just in case it helps, there is a new ClockworkMod GUI which has been developed over on Modaco, which dispenses with using the hardware buttons on the Blade in clockwork, which we know are finicky, if that's a word!!

http://android.modaco.com/topic/345738-clockworkmod-gui/

Might just help!!

Just 1 pic sample, hope it's not too big.

You say:

All the navigation keys within clockwork work ok, just nothing happens when I select an action.

So you are using the vol+ and vol- to navigate?? OK

And, when you get to option you want to use, say Power Off, bottom option on Menu, you navigate to the option with Vol-.

Then to initiate action you have selected, you must use the Home hardware button, that's the left button........

sorry to be pedantic, but it is important......no other button, like Power, or Back, will initiate the action highlighted. Just to be fully sure!!!
