Help Problem with my phone microphone

Khalid has

Lurker
On my Sony Xperia ZL, the microphone doesn't work on calls and the voice recorder. But, the mic does work when recording videos on the camera app. The mic also works when using the headphones microphone on call.
Any solutions??

Hello there! Glad to have you at AF!!
Have you tried rebooting? I know, sounds pretty basic, but sometimes the simplest solutions get missed.
Are you rooted?
Has this happened after any OTA updates, or recent app installs?
Just trying to get some background info as that may help:)

Actually this is a problem which has been on the phone for over a year now. No, it is not rooted and the software update from kitkat to lollipop didnt solve the problem either. After a quick google search i found out that it was a common problem with this particular model but started doubting the hardware was the problem after the mic worked on video recording.

Have you tried one of those hardware testing apps in the Play Store that does a "checkup" of the basic features of a phone? I tried this on my wife's phone as I could not hear her talking when calling me. I called her from several different phones and couldn't hear her. It was garbled. The phone failed the mic check test in the app.

So you haven't been able to call, or answer people for the last year? ugh, that would suck:(
Edit: oh crap, just re-read in your op where you stated the headphone mic works on calls with headphones. But still that's gotta be a pita
Curious now just for shits and grins, would a different dialer app such as Pixel help? I dunno. Or a different voice recorder app? I mean, just to rule out the stock apps.

Try plugging in your headphones and unplugging a few times. Sometimes, the phone jack will think something is in the jack but it doesn't switch over back to the phone. Had this problem on a previous phone.

I will try it and let you know.

A different dialler didnt work either. I think the phone might have two microphones and the one used for calls might be damaged

Many phones have a second mic for noise cancellation when in calls, so it's conceivable it might use that for input when recording videos (you certainly wouldn't want it to be doing noise cancellation, so it will be either that or ignore it).

The fact that the mic doesn't work for voice recording as well as calls would seem to rule out a problem with the call app or with voice transmission in calls (the fact that a headset mic works would rule the latter out). The "hardware test" that @tube517 suggested in post #4 looks like a good idea at this point.

Unfortunately, this didnt work either
...better just take it to sony for a repair now

You don't have to go to Sony and feed those pigs..they will charge you a lot for something that simple..see if there is some one on your local fleemarcket..that's what I always do here in Houston, Texas..I have a guy there and he always comes through..to give you an idea..last time he replaced the mic of my Hercules it was about $25 with the part already included..let me know..
