my phone will turn on but the screen will not light up, could it be locked or is there a problem with it ?

If you reboot the phone, do you see a "splash screen" when it starts to boot up, or does it stay completely black? If there's a problem with the android software or settings you should still see the start-up screen, because that happens before Android is loaded up.
If you do see the screen light up on startup, then the problem is software or settings. If it just remains completely black I'd guess a hardware problem.
