Root Problem with rooted phone/recovery mode

A friend of mine wants to install a custom ROM to his already rooted phone, hes did clockworkmodrecovery already got the zip file to the sd card already, but when he tried to boot in to recovery mode a little triangle and what looks like a pic of a phone pops up and wont let me proceed? any ideas, this is also for a moto droid 1.

When I did mine it went smooth, but im trying to help him out and its giving me problems...please help, thanks.

Have him install Rom Manager and flash Clockwork that way. If it still doesn't work, have him flash the alternate recovery and then flash clockwork again.

If that still doesn't work, let us know. Sometimes, the custom recovery doesn't stick and a terminal command needs to be executed to force the stock recovery from overwriting the custom recovery.

Thanks ill try that and see what happens.

The only thing I would add to what Kratos said is once you get the recovery installed make a back-up of your current ROM either through ROM Manager or the recovery interface. Do this before trying to flash anything new or removing any system apps that way you will have something to fall back on should a problem occur.

I am usually really good about stating this to everyone! I can;t believe I forgot to mention the nandroid... LOL

maybe i spoke to soon, now non of his apps are coming back.

I have noticed that when I reboot my phone, it takes anywhere from 1-5 minutes for the apps to "return". This is typically because the system has to read them form the SD card, identify them from the sd card, and then associate them with the executables on the internal card. Then, it has to restore the icons and shortcut links on your desktop. It may seem like they have disappeared, but they really haven't. They will come back, it just takes a little time after a reboot.

Edit: What method did he use? TiBU or a custom ROM?

Ok Thanks Kratos...its really not that bad anyway, he just wanted to make sure his pocket empires still worked(which it does) and he said he doesnt care if he has to redownload the rest of his apps again! lol

Been there and done that. Actually it was from reading your and Chief's post prior to rooting awhile ago that I developed a healthy OCD for doing back ups.:)

I hope that everyone develops an OCD for this. I honestly feel that if you stick to the basics, Wipe and Backup, you will typically be safe from any permanent problems!
