Help Problem with "The contact does not exist"

Hi, forum regulars. I'm new here. ;)

I have some contact shortcuts on my home screen. All of a sudden I find that when I tap any of them, I just get the message "The contact does not exist". However, the contacts do exist in the Contacts app. Somehow the shortcuts are not linking with the app anymore.

By the way, I can re-create the shortcuts, but I would prefer to use the originals because they have custom photos in the icons and it will be a hassle to reset them.

Any ideas what may have caused the error and if there is a quick way to fix it? I know what you're thinking: it's almost not worth worrying about. But I'm a perfectionist with these kinds of things!

Thanks.

Device: Samsung Galaxy Ace II, not rooted
OS: Android 4.1.2

You did nothing to change the software? No recent updates or anything? Seems strange that they just stopped working like that.
Isn't the picture actually linked to the contact rather than to the "widget"? I don't use these so I don't know. But just trying to add a couple of my contacts as widgets to my home screen pulls up the picture linked to the contact and I see no way of changing the picture...although I am using LG so maybe Samsung is different.
I know what you mean with the perfectionist thing, I think I get slight OCD over the set-up etc on my phone and computers.

Nope, no recent changes to software. I just woke up, turned on the phone, and the widgets weren't working. The pictures are a strange tangent to this story. Believe it or not, the pictures are only on the widgets, not in the Contacts app itself. For the life of me I don't remember how I managed to do this. It was a couple of years ago.

I think I may just have to re-create these shortcuts. It's not worth spending toooo much time on these things. Thanks anyway.

Add the pictures to your contacts. That way they appear on your phone when it is ringing, and on the call history.
