Help problem with updating Firmware

I have a Galaxy S, current firmware is 2.2, contract is with Vodafone UK, phone is factory unlocked and not branded.

I plugged it into Kies today and got a message saying that there is a new firmware version available - happy days thought I!!
Current version PDA:JPO / PHONE:JPP / CSC:JPO (CPW)
Latest verssion PDA:JPY / PHONE:JPY / CSC:JPY (CPW)

I start the update process -

As soon as I click Update, the phone disconnects (hhhmmmmm); almost immediately I get a message box saying Caution blah blah, I then tick the ticky-box and leave the radio button on 'allow saving' then click Start upgrade (skipping the backup stage because all my data is stored elsewhere or syncs with Google).
Another message box appears saying 'Firmware upgrade progress - then about 10 seconds later I get another message box saying, and I quote -"Firmware upgrade has stopped because GT-I9000 has been disconnected. Please check the connection and try again" - an OK button option available, which when clicked closes the whole update precess window and messages takes me back to Kies which just sits there saying it trying to connect to the phone but doesn't.

Can anyone help with this please  :(.

I have tried to update 3 or 4 time now and it falls over at the same place every-time

Thanks.

I am having exactly the same problem. Brand new PC latest everything and it just disconnects all the time.

Kies is great (not)

I eventually got it to work :-
Phone in flight mode
when running the upgrade process select save (1st screen) and backup on the next screen. Both of these failed but it then proceeded with the firmware update.

Nice workaround mate, thanks for the info.

Perfect fix - worked first time, thank you very very much capcave.

Not wanting to seem ungrateful, but I wish I knew of a way to backup the screen layouts ............. picky I know but hey!
