Root Problem with updating HBoot

I want to unlock my bootloader and root my phone and have read the guide thoroughly but, having downloaded the RUU for my carrier (vodafone UK), it will not flash telling me:

'Your ROM version is not the latest version. Please upgrade to 2.14.161.1 to apply this RUU to be able to unlock the bootloader'

But when I go to software updates on my phone and check for updates it tells me my phone's software is up to date. I upgraded to 2.3.5 a couple of weeks ago, but my ROM version is only 2.6.35.10.

Does this mean I will not be able to root my phone, or is there a way round this?

I have tried to find a solution by searching this forum but have not found one. Be grateful for any advice.

Hi,

Could you tell us what version of HBOOT you have?
Turn your phone off, remove the battery and put it back, then press volume down + power button.

That updating process looks highly risky to me, and scary. I have downloaded

RUU_Marvel_S_HTC_Europe_2.13.401.3_Radio_47.23 c.35.3037_7.54.39.28M_release_236989_signed.exe

but note that the HTC RUU message said I needed 2.14.161.1 in order to update to an unlocked bootloader, so am not sure it if it is worth the risk flashing this ROM.
