Help Problems connecting SD card via USB

Im trying to connect a SD card to my Galaxy S3, via a SD card reader and a USB to MicroUSB cable and view the files from the SD card that way (Similar to the first part of the this video, but instead of a USB stick connected, ive connected a SD card reader and SD card).

I have connected the SD card into the SD card reader and this works fine via USB as ive tested with my laptop, but when i connect it to the cable and then into my phone, i get nothing on my phone. My phone doesnt start and index the files, not do i get the popup saying "Connect USB", i simply get nothing.

Can anyone advise me what im doing wrong please?

I'm trying to see if this is possible as well, does anyone have experience with getting this to work on a non-rooted phone?
