Root problems,problem,problem...

ugh!!! I try and I try to understand the point of all this but I just seem to be spending all my time dealing with glitches, force closes, and other major and minor issues since I rooted and ROMed. I wish i could see the pot of gold that every one else seems to be experiencing but I just don't see the small bit of aesthetic enhancements to be worth all these problems.

Someone please enlighten me.

Largely it's for the performance and control.

On the stock rom, you will always have lag. There's no avoiding it. On custom roms, you have a lot less bloat. As you're rooted as well you get more control of the rom.

For instance, I usually run V6 supercharger on my roms. This frees up ALOT of ram. I also add entropy tweaks which makes everything more responsive.


The real problem that you're running into I think is just dirtyness.

Backup whatever you want with titanium backup. If you have anything on the phone that you actually need.

Download a CM10.1 nightly.
Download the proper gapps for it Goo.im Downloads - Downloading gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip

Put them on your sdcard.

Reboot into recovery

Backup & Restore > backup
Wipe Cache
Factory Reset
Install the rom
Install Gapps


You should be good to go as far as force closes.


TBH, I'd avoid kangs until you get CM working correctly. Everything else is based off of it (mostly, exception being pure aosp). If you can't get it to work without force closes.... there's something wrong. Kangs and such, that could just be an issue in the kang.

Though I think you gave some sound advice here yoinx, I disagree. AOKP, and Elemental X run fine. I'm not sure what prince is doing but I think he's just going through growing pains with a new process. I know when I first started rooting and installing custom roms I always ran into issues and almost always found out that the problem was me.

tbh prince, maybe this just isn't for you...if you aren't willingly to work through your issues and learn how things work and how to fix the problems you have then I would say it's definitely not. Rooting and Roming in my opinion is more for geeks who like to tinker and customise their experience. I personally can't imagine running stock and would miss the features of JB because I use a lot of them. Though our phone doesn't have any 100percent bug free roms, I've found that there usually is a work around.

I understand you're frustrated and I've been there myself...but if you're patient and give yourself time to learn more about android you'll start to find that these roms we have run quite nice. I'm not having any issues at all on elemental. And the only issues I ran into on aokp and cm is my phone shutting off for no reason about once a day.

But like I said, maybe this isn't for you. If you have been reading the rom threads at all you should have seen that a 100 percent bug free experience is not to be expected with custom roms. But us geeks who can't stand to leave well enough alone enjoy the freedom of android and multitude of customising we can do to it...and if you are a super geek, then you will find ways to make things work

It can definitely be frustrating, we've all been there! The reward is finally getting everything running as smoothly and as fast as you want, which has never been easy on this phone. It's usually an odd combination of apps, ROM, and process that can be very different for each Spectrum, taking quite a bit of trial and error to figure out the best results for each of us.

Like IMU said, it's not for everyone. My husband also has a Spectrum and wouldn't even consider rooting and flashing; he let's me "fix" his as long as I've tested everything first. On the other hand, I flash/tweak/retheme mine at least once a week, just because I can! Sometimes I break it more than I improve it but I learn a little more every time and enjoy doing it.

I think the point is, if you're happy with stock, stay on stock, it has it's advantages. If you're not happy with stock, and willing to put the time and effort into it, you can improve certain things by rooting and flashing, but don't feel like you have to just for the sake of it!

I see your point, but for me both AOKP and Elemental run better than CM, although none have any real problems. At this point it's a matter of personal preference and what works best on each individual phone.

I've been doing clean flashes since the beginning as you direct here. Just can't get away from the force closes with CM. Running Elemental X now and it's working GREAT. I don't know what the issue is with my phone and CM but I think I'll just stick with Nitro's builds for now.

Just go to the market and type CM10.1 themes and there are hundreds of themes to choose from. You can also find lots of themes on xda. I personally have bought many themes because I like being able to completely change the whole look of the rom anytime I want.

I actually have a slew of them I downloaded via third party. Just haven't gotten around to using them yet while I'm still working out the kinks. Now that I'm having the disappearing notification bar problem with Elemental X, I've got to deal with that before I really start customizing.
