Problems Transfering files on S3

S3Bandit

Lurker
Hi guys im new to this forum and im on here because im having problems with my S3, When i try to transfer file to my s3 sometimes it stops working and says its because the phone has stopped responding, and when it does this it still takes up the space it would of on the SD card and theres no files from it, Ive tried deleting all the files but there still space being taken up. So i formated the SD card, and got the full 30.1gb. Then tried putting the files bk and it chrashed and the same thing happened again. It not just a little space its a few GB.

Any help would be GR8 Thanks

What type of files are you trying to transfer?

Movies

Ok I tried putting the file on the phone and transfering it to sd card which didnt work... but i then put it on the sd card opened the play movies app and it played off the phones memory so i deleted it from the phone and tried opening from sd card which it would skip stright to the end and not play.. i deleted and put it back on now it says it doesnt play. this is really winding me up been doing it for hours now

Sorry for all the repeated postings but im figuring out things as i go along, so all the videos i put on the phone play with no problem either 1s downloaded from dropbox, but none from the external sdcard the card is a 32gb class 4 card. Im trying to put a selection of movies on for my soon to watch and canrt fit many on the phones memory. Will i need a better card?

I have 1 film that plays off the card, this is so frustrating. Films play off the phone but the same file will not play off the card.

Surely someone must have come across this before i really need some help here.

Format the card as FAT32 from a PC. It's probably formatted as exFat or whatever they call it and has issues. I have a 64gig card that was super cranky until I got it formatted correctly on my S3.

You might need a 3rd party utility to format if you have Windows 7.

When i goto format it, there isnt anything to select what type of file system i want it to be. Ive just tried the standard format which i can select but doesnt work im using Vista 64

As I said you will need a 3rd party utility to format for FAT32.

You need to format it from your PC. put the card in a card reader so the PC will read it like a basic flash drive then format it.

Wouldn't it be best to format the card in the phone?
For the S3 it's: Settings / Storage / (under SD card) Format SD card
That's what I did for my new 32Gb card and have had no issues.

Have you tried filling the card to a full 32gig? There have been some reported issues because the S3 is going to format it as exFAT which I read can have issues. If you format the card as FAT32 you can see all the content you put on it.

I just stuck my card in an adapter and opened Windows 7 Disk Management.
It says the card is FAT32.

Update:

OK, I withdraw my comment. After some experimenting I find out the S3 formats to FAT. Not FAT32, not exFAT, just plain old FAT. I used an old 2Gb card and formatted it to Fat32 and then exFAT, installed it in the S3 and formatted it from the phone. It always came back as FAT.

So my 32Gb card must have been preformatted to FAT32 by Transcend and I never reformatted.

It's probably a bad MicroUSB cable. Especially if you're using the stock one. Samsung is notorious for bad USB cables.
