Root problems with clockwork/general issues

ok so i got my viewsonic and i've been reading up on modding for a few days. i'm moderately tech savvy, and i'm following instructions fully. I'm on tap ui version 1.1-3588. I've followed the instructions for clockwork for both internal sd and external sd. I get to the point where I'm ready to reset with the power/volume up keys. I hold them until I see the recovery messages in the top left corner of the three birds screen. I release the buttons, and it never goes any farther. It just boots up into the normal interface. I thought maybe I was missing something, and that clockwork was loaded, so I tried to load Z-Pad, and I can't get anywhere with that.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance...

I think u need to hold onto the power button and volume up until you see the gtab start the installation process. You'll know when it starts when you see the exclamation in a triangle sign.

nope. i held the buttons and never saw anything with an exclamation point. if i keep holding the buttons, it just cycles through the boot process (i get the three birds screen, then see the recovery message in the top left, then get the gtablet screen, then it starts back over.) when i do finally release the buttons, i get a box with an arrow that looks like it's an installation process, but i still never get anywhere else.
