Help problems with data connection

Hello all
I really hope that someone can help. I have just got a samsung galaxy apollo. I am having trouble connecting to the orange/t-mobile network. I was able to do this on my last phone, but just can't make it work now.

When I try to connect automatically to a network it says, unable to connect whilst data service is activated? I say 'yes' to disconnect data services and then try to connect to a network. But it just won't pick up both networks. The 'R' roaming symbol does not appear and my signal is really quite bad. It is constantly dipping out.

I have a g with two arrows either side of it that disappears when I say 'yes' to disconnect data services'. What is this 'g'??? It seems to be preventing me from picking up a decent signal.

This is driving me mad. Can you help???

Many thanks
Amanda

Welcome to the forums, Amanda.

The first thing I would do would be a factory data reset ("menu > settings > privacy > factory data reset").

But if you're unwilling to do that at this point, the next thing to try would be to clear all connection settings, then go into the application manager (menu path should be something like, "menu > settings > applications > manage applications") and clear all data, cache and defaults on networking and data apps.

Then I'd reboot and reconfigure networking and see how things went from there.
