Problems with default PDF reader

Hi. I have a problem with one of my workmates phones (It is a HTC Velocity), where I cant seem to change the default reader for PDF files. When he recieves a PDF in an email, he downloads the attachment and opens it throught the stock email application, and it opens straight to Adobe Reader.

My problem is that Adobe Reader on android does not display some of our internal PDF files properly, so I want to change the default app to Polaris Office. But when I go into his app settings, it says Adobe is not set as a default program.

Is this a setting in the email app that automatically opens adobe? How can I change this?

You might try this: Open the PDF in the Download folder on the SD card with a file manager like EStrongs File Explorer.
When ES let you choose the reader then check Polaris as default reader.

Next time the email app should open a PDF attachment with Polaris :)

Hi Harry, thanks for the reply.

I did as you instructed, but ES never gave me the option for which program to use, it jusr opened straight to adobe.

A tried long pressing on the PDF in ES and choosing open as text with Polaris, but I think that would just try to open in its word-equivelent program. But it was worth a go.

I tried uninstalling Adobe, but it only gave me the option of untinstalling the updates and going back to the "factory settings", so I think it was preinstalled on the phone. Could that be affecting it?

Thanks again.

Adobe Reader was pre-installed with all my HTC phones, an exception is my new One X.
I've never had problems to choose the reader for PDF attachments.

Maybe you might double-check in Settings - Apps/Applications on the Adobe Reader to make sure that the "Clear defaults" button is really greyed out.

Is there possibly a way to do a complete uninstall of Adobe if it came with the phone? ...

Only if you have ICS on you phone you can disable apps which came with phone. And before I can do that, I've to uninstall all updates of such an app.

To unistall the updates of Adobe app you could try too. And delete its cache and its data.

I have disabled Adobe, but the pdf files will not open. If I try to open through email, I get the message "Unable to open this type of file", if I try to open through ES, I get "Sorry, no application availiable". Its almost as if Adobe has exclusive access to the pdf files, even when its not on the phone.

Oh, sorry Jason, my mistake !

Polaris doesn't open PDF's. At least not with this pre-installed Polaris app on HTC phones.

If you have installed an other PDF reader like RepliGo Reader or Mantano Reader you'll able to choose Adobe or the other reader.

Sorry of this mislead of mine.

No worries Harry, not your mistake. I was the one who was trying to use Polaris.

Anyway, I downloaded a PDF reader (simply called PDF reader), as it wasnt my phone I had to use a free reader (Sorry jefboyardee, I didnt see your post until after I had installed it).

With that installed I instantly got the option to choose which reader, chose PDF reader and voila! Success. Our internal PDFs now display correctly.

Interestingly, Polaris was preinstalled on my SGS2, and opens PDFs without a problem. It is one of my options when opening PDFs, along with Adobe and Aldiko.

Anyway, thank you so much for your help Harry, I really appreciate it.
