Is there any way to download the 2.1 zip file straight to the sd card, instead to the download folder on the eris?

You're using the Eris? This is the Droid forum. Maybe you want to search the Eris forum for your answer. 
The way I did it for my son's Eris was downloaded it to the PC then moved it to the root of the SD card. I guess you could use Astro or another file manager to do it on the phone itself.

This is in the wrong place, you would get more help if you posted in the Eris forum. But no, it automatically downloads to the download folder, just grab a file explorer from the market and use that to move the file from download to the root of the SD card.
