FranzZz

Lurker
hey,

when i connect my htc wildfire s to my laptop using USB, the phone charges, but i cannot get any data connection. I already installed and updated htc sync and htc sync manager. I also checked the settings of my phone and tried different usb cables as well as restarting phone and laptop, but nothing worked. I am using windows 7.

i would appreciate any help!

thanks

Hi

Welcome to the androidforums! :)

When you plug the usb in you should get a pop up asking you to choose how to connect. Select "Disk drive". The phone should appear as a drive in the windows MyComputer file manager.

If you dont get the pop up there should be a usb symbol in the notification bar - pull it down and choose "select to change usb connection type" and then choose "disk drive"

If you don't get these choices, have you tried changing which usb port you are using on your laptop?

(I have never used htc sync as it seems unnecessary for simple file management, although I guess if you are trying to sync outlook etc it is needed.)

Do post back if that doesn't help and describe which options you do see from the notification bar.

Roger

And have you tried a different USB cable? Ive got some cables that work, and some that don't.

Thank you guys for your quick and frendly support!
I already tried mutiple usb cables on different USB ports. Also I tried it with another computer. It always works for charging, but not for the data connection. I remember that after I tried it again yesterday, I once got some kind of error message, that some USB device was connected to my laptop, but cannot be identified. But I only got this message once and I did never show up again in further trials. Also I dont get any notification from my mobile, when I connect to my laptop except that it is charging. I already tried to use different connection options ("htc sync" / "disc drive") as standard connection setting, but none of them worked.

Actually I only installed htc sync, because I thought it would be necessary to get the usb driver installed. Maybe I have to download / instal and additional software / driver on my laptop? Since I got my mobile from a friend (its his old one) I dont have any software CD unfortunately.

Hi

Have you got "ask me" ticked in the USB connection type settings? If you have and it is not asking you each time I suspect that your phone has a faulty USB port (ie data pins not working) since you have eliminated the lead and PC :(

Roger

I activated the "ask everytime" option, but when I connect it never asks me. A defect USB port on my phone might make sense. The only thing i am wondering about, if it is possbible that charging still works, but data exchange does not work although I use the same port for both options. But maybe that is just my missing technical backgroung knowledge...
